Car Fix DIY Videos

Video tutorial on how to troubleshoot and repair the switch located on the trunk to open it. These trunk switches will fail and can be very costly to replace, but it’s usually just a simple fix that doesn’t cost anything. This will be more of a walkthrough as I’ve already repaired this trunk switch. This particular car I am working with here today is a 1997 BMW 540i sedan, but this procedure possibly applies to other BMW models as well.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-standard/flat screwdriver

Procedure:
-remove the handle assembly using a standard/flat screwdriver and pry it out by the small slot on the plastic handle
-once out there is no need to disconnect the wiring unless the microswitch is damaged
-remove the small metal retaining clip holding on the microswitch, then determine if the microswitch works
-if it does, determine if the push pad is correctly in place or if the metal tang is in proper contact with the microswitch
-if the push pad is an issue, realign it
-if the metal tang is an issue, readjust it using your fingers, needle nose pliers, or a standard/flat screwdriver
-if you find the switch is an issue, check the circuit using a multimeter if it has power, the electrical connector is located under the trunk liner
-if the circuit has power, determine if the switch is working correctly using a multimeter
-reassembly in reverse
