Ronald Yoong says:

Great video, just changed my DVD drive this afternoon, save me at least $400…. Thanks a million. Keep it up

lloydnyerssaunders says:

thats going to be difficult- the car will at the very least need programming. i suppose it depends a lot on the plug connections and whether or not either screen will successfully display from the same CCC/CIC head unit. i cant tell you for sure im afraid but i would love to know how you go- keep me updated mate

I want to replace my X5 2013 small screen without NAV to the 9 inch screen, should I replace the whole system “the screen, the knob, and the CD changer” to have the navigation work or only the screen?

Thank you

lloydnyerssaunders says:

i would only recommend a replacement OEM dvd unit- ive seen too many dodgy after market models that are wired up badly and cause issues, but if want a different one speak to your nearest car audio shop they’ll recommend something. for this job i used plastic trim removal tools, a bosch ixo drill, a 1/4 inch to drill chuck adaptor, torx sockets, phillips head drill bit and lots of caution. thanks for the positive feedback, good luck

Olufasan says:

Hi Lloyd, Please send me a list of tools required and recommend a make and model of a replacement DVD player.

BTW your video is very helpful thanks

lloydnyerssaunders says:

dont suppose the volume is down? apart from that i can tell you both audio is meant to come through the speakers- but if you have an amplifier all the speakers are routed through it, so the amp may be buggered. its in the boot behind the rear left carpeted wall- you could also check the fuses in the back right hand side while youre there and in the passenger side footwell- there are white sheets with pictoral graphics so look for the speaker symbol and check the fuse numbers listed under it

Hello llyod I have a 2008 X5 the navigation come on as well as radio but i am not getting any sound perhaps you can help me on this

Nav Graya says:

hello llyod
great video!
i have a easy ?
i got a bmw x5 e70 2009
its got 6 cdchanger in glove box, i want to know whether it can play dvds
i have tried but to no avail. a dvd drive does show on the menu. i have trieds to put the dvd in all 3 places but still nothing just get a message saying unable to read

Anand Biharie says:

Lloyd many thanks for your response. Fuses seems to be ok. Went in default without having executed any repairs. Since the spinning noise is present, it does look like a screen problem. I am in South America where we do not have a BMW-dealer. A few guys are able to perform a scan with the software: Only mentioned power problem.
Will plan a removal of the whole system coming week to determine the problem. Regards, anand

lloydnyerssaunders says:

shouldnt have anything to do with battery renewal. i would start by checking fuses, then checking wiring and power in. have you had anyone pull it out previously or have you added any aftermarket stuff? if there is power in it’ll need a new screen more than likely, but it would pay to get the dealer to look into it before doing anything yourself- they may even offer you warranty or goodwill if they feel like being nice. thanks for the question anand

Anand Biharie says:

Hello Lloyd. Screen black.DVD and CD does not eject. Sound coming out of CD/DVD player as if a player is continuously speeding. Performed reset but without results. Software check up indicates power failure. Any correlation with battery renewal? Looking forward to your reply.

lloydnyerssaunders says:

the new dvd unit was a bmw genuine product from the dealership- theyve updated it a few times. and regarding the fault code it will come up after disconnecting the battery, which i highly recommend you do to prevent electrical shorts or shocks. its a breeze to get rid of the warning which comes up on the dash by turning the steering wheel all the way right, all the way left and then back to the middle like i described.

Versace Isac says:

and also where did you get the dvd drive unit please let me know

Versace Isac says:

hi what do you mean at end of the video .you mean before you start the job to do to dvd unit to disconnect the battery to avoid error code ? can you tell me or?

lloydnyerssaunders says:

if the plug at the back of the screen is in, then its connected- far as i remember there is only one or two plugs for the screens and if theyre in its either a wiring break or something not plugged into the ccc- the ccc has about 5 or 6 plugs into it. i would tell the dealership to replace the screen first- then if you need the wire, do it later. single wires should be able to be solered for a fix unless the pins or plugs have been damaged

tony edwards says:

I’m sorry, it’s not called the idrive wire it’s called the connecting line ccc/cid. Does this sound familiar? Any idea how to connect it? Thanks again.

lloydnyerssaunders says:

i cant say- the idrive has a small harness attached so im not sure what they mean by ‘idrive wire’. if you can talk the service advisor into warranty or ‘goodwill’ then this will be easiest for you- get it cheap and no need to do it yourself

tony edwards says:

My E70 screen went black on my 2007 x5 4.8i, the dealer said screen needs to be replaced as well as the i-drive wire part# 61129195760. replacing the screen seems simple but how do you replace the i-drive wire? Thanks

lloydnyerssaunders says:

sounds like you have the exact issue i was fixing in this video- hardening of the anti vibrational gel on the dvd reader head. i cant help you out with the part number- just call your nearest bmw dealership and have your VIN number on hand and they’ll tell you. once you get it follow this video and you should be sweet

AAHTOXAA says:

Hello! Thank you for your video!
I have a problem on my BMW E70 4.8i with DVD Navigation CCC. After I have inserted it, it can write that he couldn’t find disc, eventually when he “find” disc, it works ~2 hours and then again loose it. As I read in the internet, it is a problem of DVD drive, Disc didn’t scratched, not new map nor old work. May be you met this problem before? And what is the part number of original Nav. DVD driver for E70?

lloydnyerssaunders says:

actually if the wood trim is part of the glovebox that requires prying up some thin plastic trim and removing 4 T30 torx screws. cant remember very well, my memory is flailing me sorry

lloydnyerssaunders says:

if youre referring to the wood trim next to the air vent all that is required is to get behind it with a plastic trim removal tool (like im using in this video) and pry it up carefully. once its out you have to disconnect the plugs behind them, all of which simply pull out from memory. i would like to make more videos but i work on landcruisers in the mines now. thanks for your question though

BMWX1M says:

hey, can you make a video on how to remove the wood trim ?
thank you

lloydnyerssaunders says:

sounds bad, needs the plug connection at the back checked. probably requires a new screen, but its way worth your while to go to the dealership and have it checked- firstly because they have a catalogue of known common faults (called PUMA) and they have the proprietary diagnosis system (ISTA) which while sometimes dumb it attempts to make it as simple and quick as possible for any technician.

WDX5 says:

My E70 screen went white, while idrive functions work. Have an idea whats the cause? Thanks

lloydnyerssaunders says:

sounds like two separate issues, but both are to do with the dvd unit, so my money says its buggered like this one was. your fuses are in the passenger footwell held up by a green phillips head screw if you wanted to check if theyre blown. also your sure there arent two disks in there? happens quite often surprisingly. only other thing would be to check the surface of the nav disk but if its stuck you’ll need to remove the whole unit like i did here to get it out anyway… unlucky mate
