►The S54 began a series of hiccups for BMW’s M division as they fitted their high-performance engines with tight clearances and poorly made bearings. Those factors led to catastrophic engine failures as the M5, M6, and E46 M3 suffered from rod bearing failure. Replacing the rod bearings with aftermarket fixes is the only way to avoid the issue, but that can be a massive undertaking. However, we’re here to help.
You should replace your bearings every 80,000 miles with regular and spirited driving. Regular track mileage and constant high-rpm operation will shrink their service life by about 30% on average, so be aware of that if that’s where your S54 will live. If you’re looking for any other information on your BMW E46 M3 engine, like specs, trouble spots, and upgrades, check out our engine guide here.
Watch along as Gareth Foley, FCP Euro’s BMW Expert, tackles an E46 M3 rod bearing replacement.

Is it me or did Gareth have a glow up ⬆️?
Have not finished the video but I will as I'm likely to do this now. Your videos are great. Additionally…your weight loss is noticeable and I congratulate you. You must feel ad be much healthier. Thanks for supporting the M3 platform.
Holy shit Gareth, You're looking like an e30 these days!
Great video Gareth but would you not also check/replace the main bearings whilst having the bottom end all stripped down?
Gareth you're looking great my guy, keep it up!
32:20 great tip
Man I LOVE these e46 m3 videos!!
Our 2011 BMW 328i 3 liter has 200,000 kms ( 120,000 miles )
Mechanic says there is Metal in the oil filter ( just changed with 300 kms since )
Advises to drop pan and check lower engine I'm assuming it's these rod bearings may be the culprit
Any idea How much Labour is involved for BMW mechanic to complete job ?
Well I was hoping this video came out last year before I did mine, but I guess I can check my work against this!
Can you guys do a s65 rod bearing video?
How much weight have you lost?
Damn inspiring fitness improvement, Gareth!
does it really needs a break in period? thought that rod bearings didn't make any type of contact and once you torqued them, the bearing crush was already set in
Ive been waiting for this video for my z4m
Gareth, you been hitting the gym! Looking nice, happy for your success! Love your videos you saved me like million dollars worth of aggravation.
Gracias, saludos desde Lima Perú.
Love the NACA vent in the reinforcement plate.
Gareth looking very CSL here
Damn my guy lost a lot of weight, good job man!
