Hello Elliott, Often this is caused by a failing idle control valve. If you
can control your idle by pushing on the gas pedal but when off the pedal it
dies the first place to start is the idle air control valve or IAC.

repair that simply? What did you mean about checking your Cyclone? Does it
apply to X5 e53 as well?

The wiring would have to be spliced in to fix this. In rare cases a new
engine harness may be needed. The fuse for the o2 is in the E-box where the
DME is located in a small square fuse holder. For the running issue it
could be many things, fuel volume problem, clogged cats, follow any fault
codes you have first to try and chase this down. You may need to do a
compression and cylinder leakage test as well to check the health of the
engine.

That is a good point to rent the tools from a part store. I forgot that you
can do that 🙂 As a mechanic I have to have the tools I need on hand. The
new oxygen sensors usually do have a small amount of lubricant. The I just
did a remove and install on my 3. This would also be a way to check the
monolith(honeycomb) of the CAT using a boroscope through the oxygen sensor.

I thinl local auto parts stores will loan the tool but I used the open
wrench on mine. If I am not mistaken, mine were prelubed with antiseize
from factory. But good video nevertheless.

I have a question, where do i find the wire extension connector that goes
to the power supply to the oxygen sensor. It got caught by the exhaust
close to the cat conv and it’s burned . But i can’t find that wire. Also
when i can rev the motor and works fine but when i put it in D or R looses
rpms and wont go anywhere …any ideas?…thx

Hello Joseph, You may have a problem with the power supply to the oxygen
sensors, a wiring problem, or an internal problem in your engine computer.
Best to have a BMW technician do some hands on testing for you.

The cyclone separator is also called the PCV valve. Most BMW’s use oil and
the specification by BMW is a bit on the high side. Normal range per BMW is
1 qt per 750 miles. Most vehicles will always to better than this. On my
E46 and on your X5 it is common for the cyclone separator to fail. They can
cause an internal air leak, cause oil consumption, and have even fixed many
oil engine hydro locks due to a bad cyclone that has allowed oil to get
sucked into the intake and locks up the engine.
