Wow a pair of vise grips on the end of the cam ouch! Think about this vise
grips get their grip by displacing metal ie. They squish the metal into
their teeth to get a good hold thats why they leave marks. These little
teeth marks of disformed metal are weak and can break off that means more
metal floating around in the oil. It will be interesting to hear this motor
run again if it does!

Artem Nakhodnov says:

@Horsepowerfreakcrazy No one said you need to actually squish the vise
grips, just set them so they are barely gripping, just enough to hold the
end and turn the cam. Also, cams are heat treated and VERY very hard, they
will break before any marks would even appear.

Horsepowerfreakcrazy says:

Actually cams in between the lobes are about 35-45 rockwell. The lobes are
induction hardened up to 60-65 rockwell or about 370 to 390 brinell. If the
whole cam was hard it would crack because BMW uses hollow cams. The cam has
to be of mild hardness to allow for torsional twist. The only part that
needs to be hard are the lobes. The other thing is that the cam locks for
timing the cams go where you were grabbing with the vise grips. Its your
motor I just saying
