Great channel. I have been learning some things from you. I am a 25+ year retired mechanic. I really would value your opinion if I could pick your brain…
I inherited a '98 528i, 101k, with the A4S 310r / GM 4l30e trans. After the cooling system ruptured on me, I did a head gasket & bolts, single vanos rebuild, radiator, thermostat w/ aluminum housing, water pump & hoses plus some other maintenance items thinking I would have a decent car for a few years. Runs STRONG. It developed an intermittent (now permanent) stuck in 2nd gear problem with the trans warning light on the dash.
I Stopped driving it.

I really would like to fix this, the car is clean. It was intermittent problem at 1st, with code P0741(?) – Trans position switch out of range. I carefully marked its' installation position, removed & surgically disassembled the switch to clean (discontinued, you can't buy it any longer). It looked absolutely perfect, even the wiring that is a common problem to degrade. I switched it though the range and got what appeared to be variable resistance in different positions on my ohm meter. It looks like it was working correctly. I epoxied it back together and reinstalled it along my alignment marks. Still stuck in 2nd gear…

While I was in the hospital for surgery, the car was taken to a BMW independent garage by my family to be looked at/fixed and put new tires on IF they FIXED the trans problem 1st. They scanned it, said it needed the trans position switch, put the tires on… and then found out you can't buy it any longer. I got jerked around for weeks being told it was coming from Europe. One day the garage moved the car & trans was intermittently working properly. They tried to tell my family it was "unevenly worn" tires that caused the problem.

It STILL was stuck in 2nd gear the next time I drove it. . . sometimes if you shut the car off and restarted it, it would occasionally get all 4 gears again. I actually found and bought a used trans position sensor, installed it, and still have same problem with 2nd gear.

There is nothing physically wrong with the transmission, the fluid is clean and full, when it has all its gears, the car really drives excellent.
Is it worth a shot just replacing the 2-3 shift solenoid, and is there a way to verify & diagnose this problem?

I need some advice on my 525i e39 2004 i recently fitted a engine in from a e46 330i .. the engine was a m52tu i use it for a 4 months an it blew the gasket.. i stripped the engine down and found it badly scored in the centre and the bore was worn.. i have the old sub asblemby which i bought the car with.. and the bore seems fine.. my question is. ( can i use the pistons from the m52tu in the original block for this car?) An is there any difference with m52tu cylinder head and m54..

MrCuckoobox says:

When my wife had her '99 e39 Wagon, the transmission would shift back and forth especially high speeds…….because of the spark plugs were beginning to fail causing the engine not to produce the power that it should and the transmission would struggle to be in the right gear.

Ye I bought a e39 and the previous owner installed Bosch spark plugs and they blew out the hole, always use ngk n torque them down!

Hey great channel love the content, I have a question for you if you don't mind answering. I have a 2000 e39 528i wagon build date of 6/99. I am pretty sure I have the 4L30E since I have 2 pans but all the shops tell me I have the 5 speed one. I have some odd shifting issues and was thinking the PO may have had a DEXIII change since all the shops think it has a 5 speed or they went by what the shop computer said to use which is DEXIII. Short of taking it to a shop and having them machine flush all the current fluid and replace it with the proper fluid. How many drain and fills would it take to get it close enough to have enough of the right fluid? Also your older videos you used to use Castrol Import now you are recommending Valvoline Maxlife but which one? Multi vehicle?
Thanks!!

Did You said 520i ?

SteelRazorback says:

Yea man co-part is shit unless its something you specifically want.

Jay Smith says:

How much do you think you can get for an e46 in your area?

Matt Hudson says:

Since we're talking about transmissions and such, I'm changing the trans fluid and filter in my 93 Vette, and replacing that factory pan with an aftermarket that has a drain plug. I'm gonna run that big red jug of Valvoline max life full-synthetic in it. I plan on doing the trans fluid in my e38 740iL next month or whenever I get around to it. What fluid do you recommend for it? Should I also run Valvoline max life in that dude, or would you recommend something else? It has that regular 5-speed auto where all the gears are in a line. None of that shift sideways for manual gear selection nonsense, if that matters?
