►BMW learned from its first foray into direct injection in a few ways, but the most beneficial for owners was a switch to the solenoid-style direct injection. They’re less expensive and easier to acquire as an owner, but there’s still a decent chance you’ll have to replace your BMW’s injectors at some point. It’s a fairly involved job that requires a few specialized tools. However, with them and a little time, there’s no reason this job couldn’t be done at home.

A bad direct fuel injector can fail in several ways. If you’re lucky, it’ll fail in the closed position, meaning it fails to deliver fuel into the cylinder. That’ll be met with a very obvious misfire and associated code. An injector failing in the open position means fuel doesn’t stop being injected into a given cylinder. At best, that leads to crazy fuel trim readings, some stumbling, and a few engine codes. At worst, the excessive fuel washes away the oil film on the cylinder walls, causing the rings and piston skirt to dig in and score them.
