It seems a bit on the high side. You may have a slow leak or the engine is
buring coolant (hopefully a slow leak 🙂 )

Hey thanks for the video! I have a 2001 325i. I use Prestone 50/50 But iv
had to be putting coolant like every 1month1/2. Because it marks me low, is
it normal to have to fill it up every 1month 1/2??? Or no?

Im getting rdy to change out my coolant expansion tank on bmw X3 2007. I
didnt see any videos on this. So if you could answer a couple of questions
that would be awesome. Drain all of the coolant out before changing the
coolant expansion tank? Also when changing out the coolant expansion tank
do you need to buy anything extra besides the tank from the bmw store?
Thank You in advance. You have great videos.

AskTheCarExperts says:

It should be cold on the final top off. It is normal to need a top off due
to normal loss from evaporation.

My is cold, do i have to turn on the engine before i top-off, i did not top
off for the last 30k kilometers is this normal to need to be topped off

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, If the level is low then you may have a leak or in worst case the
engine is using coolant during combustion. If the level is good then check
the level sensor on the bottom of the reservoir. If it is low then check
for any signs of greenish residue indicating a leak. You never want to
overheat this engine as it can cause major damage.

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, Thanks for the post 🙂 That is on the high side. Usually you can go
about 15,000 miles or so before needing a top off. This could mean a few
things. There is a slow leak somewhere. Take a look around the thermostat
and water pump and the radiator. Or the engine is using coolant which would
mean a head gasket. Hopefully not the last item. You engine is prone to
failing if it was ever over heated. It is good to keep this in mind when
dealing with a coolant problem.

AskTheCarExperts says:

🙂 In warm weather environments this is not really a problem for a top off.
For cold weather locations having the correct mix is important due to
freezing if applicable. I have seen an expansion tank split open due to
water usage in an empty tank that was filled the night of a very cold
night. The coolant must have been very low. Adding water is okay if there
is still a good amount of coolant left but will raise the freeze point a
bit. In most cases not a problem if all you have is water. 🙂

Hello there! I’ve just bought my first BMW, an E46 from 2004 but I’m
already seeing the coolant indicator on all the time. I checked the level
before buying it and it seemed fine – this is my first car so I’m a
relative novice to car DIY, should I be worried about this warning light?
Many thanks in advance.

AskTheCarExperts says:

Thank you. I have not had the oportunity to record this yet. Hopefully some
day 🙂 The expansion tank should be all you need. On vehicles with
automatic transmissions sometimes the transmission thermostat in the
expansion tank can break during removal but as long as it does not come
apart you should not need anything extra. I do like to replace the bleeder
screw but a new expansion tank may come with one. I hope this helps. Let me
know if I can help further. Best wishes on your repairs!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Coolant maintains the engine temperature by removing heat through the
radiator. It also provides heat to the vehicle interior. Coolant has a low
freeze point to protect the engine from freeze damage.

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello Denis, If you have the drain plug this is the best way to drain and
then fill. On some BMW’s there is no drain plug on the bottom of the
radiator so the best way in this case is to remove the lower radiator hose
and let it drain out. Then fill with the 50/50 mix of the correct fluid.
Ethyline glycol based coolant.
