Great Video!

Nice and straightforward. I was able to replace my pump and filter because of your videos. Saved me $400. Will definitely refer to your videos for future issues.

Thanks FCP Euro!

FCP Euro says:

Not sure of the thread size, but a normal fuel pressure gauge should have any adapters you need to fit it.

paul van says:

I believe I have some fuel delivery problems as well, there’s a schrader valve at the front of the fuel rail. There isn’t an auto parts store around that has the adapter to measure the operating fuel pressure. 2 questions, what is the thread at the schrader valve and is there a tool to attach to it?

Sujeet Karna says:

Great video. This helped me work up the courage to replace the fuel filter on my 2009 528i (E60). BTW, the BMW tech I consulted said the switch for the fuel filter, which is on the left tank could be done with 1/2 or less because the fuel is siphoned by a “Jet Pump” to the right as the tank is trained. He was right. I did the procedure successfully with slightly 1/2 a tank.

The Car Life says:

The fuel pump would turn on with the key in position 2. I have had an ongoing issue with poor performance especially with heavy throttle (basically felt like the car was shutting down). I tested fuel pressure at the Schroeder valve on the fuel rail and found that it read at a mere 10-15PSI (engine off). The fuel pressure regulator was fine which meant that the fuel pump itself was not physically moving enough fuel. Fuel pressure returned to within spec after the fuel pump was replaced.

rcatank says:

why would you need to replace the fuel pump? what were they symptoms that you made you want to do this?

FCP Euro says:

It wouldn’t hurt, our tank was about half-full (or half-empty if you’re a pessimist) and we didn’t have any trouble. You probably don’t want to be sticking your hands deep into a full tank though.

Fhantom99 says:

Great video Gareth! Very detailed and thorough. Would it help to do this fix when the tank is close to empty?

binniedj says:

Thanks. It’s right at 14.0 with it running idle.

FCP Euro says:

Test the system. Resting voltage should be around 12.2-12.4 volts. When the car is running the voltage should be between 13.8 and 14.4 volts. If you’re within this range I wouldn’t worry about it. You can also test fuel pressure at the Schroeder valve at the fuel rail. You should be around 50PSI with the engine running. If you are within these ranges I wouldn’t worry about it too much. If anything, I would siggest replacing the fuel filter as a precaution.

Gareth,

Thanks for the DIY as this is on my list to do. My 540 has 94k with complete cooling system overhaul and I’m not sure what should be next. I was either going to replace the fuel pump or the alternator as I’ve heard both of them are known to fail. Which would you suggest being done first?
