I did this the other….what a pain in the Rsssssssss……took me three
day (could’ve been shorter), i took too many bolts off, from the cover
plate, oil pump, and attachment sleeve. only to find out after i assembled
everything back in, and found “extra bolts”. It was really had to judge
without a line of sight, and going by touch/feel.

i should’ve let the engine run before reassembling for the second time to
make sure of no more leaks and stuff. I had to two tighten the head cover
bolts as some oil was slightly leaking. luckily there were accessible.

but got there in the end, with battle scars and all.

It was back breaking, tiring, but all in all informative.

Thanks Lloyd for your help.

Hey mate, great video!!! i’ll be tackling this tomorrow but I have another
question…..my mums car (120i) keeps getting the check engine light come
up on the dash and BMW have told her it is because she needs to us premium
fuel as it is an oxygen sensor code have you heard of this before and do
you have any tips?

ratgreen says:

So do you have to take the rocker cover off to do this? Can I not just undo
the 3 10mm bolts and slide it out?

Dogan Yilmaz says:

Good afternoon saunders, here is the feedback. Vacuum pump still leaks but
a lot less than before. I will change the VP O-ring as well as you
suggested. Now I am looking for the oil filter set. Another issue I
mentioned before was the exhaust. I believe it is something else. I
searched the web and the forums are also talking about the turbo wastegate
actuators. What would you say? Would it be the turbo? And do you have any
recommendations? I guess it will be pricy. Thanks so much for your time.

BMTroubleU says:

some have said its possible, but its harder and the rocker cover often
leaks along with the vac pump, so ive always done them together

BMTroubleU says:

dunno what you mean by ccv, but the pcv is a bastard. its a diaphram type
and lives under the intake manifold. if youre replacing it i also recommend
you change the pipes to and from it (that come from the rocker cover and go
to the sump) cause splits in those are common. i have no idea what the oil
filter o ring has to do with the vacuum pump- the recall states vacuum pump
needs replacing, just like i show in the video. pretty sure you cant get it
out without removing the rocker cover

Tilan123 says:

Some people call it CCV, some people call it PCV which is why I used both.
I’ve heard the breather hoses need to be replaced as well. How many man
hours would you estimate for the PCV Valve with the breather hoses to be
rreplaced?

I cannot copy the link but if you go to ebay.de and search for the item

LUCIANO GALVAO says:

Its technical information is of great importance for the repair because the
vehicle runs perfectly. Thank you!

Mitch Ghadi says:

Certainly will do , thanks mate .

BMTroubleU says:

i believe it, although it is easier with the rocker cover off and most of
the time there is a rocker cover leak in addition to the vac pump anyway.

BMTroubleU says:

thanks mate. if your oil level sensor is playing up thats pretty common-
just keep it mind they take around 1/2 an hour to update their level so
have patience and you need to be driving it on a level surface to have
valid results. if not change sensor. if you engine is leaking oil onto your
driveway or you see slight smoking in the engine bay then yes it’ll be
gaskets. recommend you do the vacuum pump while your there, they are common
and you dont want to pull it all apart again later

BMTroubleU says:

Yes. I ended up having to remove the positive terminal and cables from the
drivers side of the engine bay so i could have more space to lift the
rocker cover up… so yea, you’ll have to and its good to do to be safe
regardless

BMTroubleU says:

no worries mitch, many issues like this could be caused by bad fuel (ie <95
octane), so try putting a fe batches of something else in, possibly using
an octane booster and see how you go. otherwise get a fault code read out
to see if it provides any direction

BMTroubleU says:

a buzzing noise when cold under acceleration still sounds like a loose heat
shield or muffler breakage. take a very careful look at the basics before
diving into other pricey stuff. also you have a 4 cylinder non-turbo so i
can guarantee you its not a turbo issue

sunny2170 says:

I have a 2005 e90 320i, is the vacuum pump located in the same position as
shown in this video.

sunny2170 says:

Hi Thanks for the great video. Is your shop located in Sydney?

Dogan Yilmaz says:

I don’t want to bother you with tons of questions but do you have any
suggestions for the buzzing sound from the exhaust. Lately its coming from
the exhaust when the engine is cold. Whenever I push the gas pedal
somewhere in between the buzzing noise coming from the exhaust. I couldn’t
find out anything specific related to that problem. One forum is
recommended Golf Tee Mod which I don’t have any since I believe I have the
4 cylinders.. Thanks so much for your suggestions in advance.. Regards.

Mitch Ghadi says:

Hey Mate , in my last post , i called you kenny , i apologize mate .

Tilan123 says:

Hey mate do you recommend I try the ‘ Oil Filter O-Ring’ fix for the vacuum
pump? Apparently it’s the best fix for the job. If I have already got my
Tappet COver fixed, do I still have to remove it in order to access the vac
pump? Also do you know much about the CCV or PCV valve with this engine
(N46B20)? Do you think you have done a video on that? cheers!

BMTroubleU says:

hahaha, cheers boss

BMTroubleU says:

aw man, you just sealed up your vac pump didnt you? its a rocky road to
salvation sometimes hey mate

DameAndThatGame says:

dont forget bro there are 2 seals, one is the gasket that connects to the
cranks case, the other you cannot buy… its the gasket inside the vac
pump.. simple solution, use a o ring from the oil filter and use this to
replace it, plenty of diy out there and so much cheaper than a new vac ::)

Dogan Yilmaz says:

Hi mate, Sorry for the late feedback. I was away for a while enjoying the
sun in Izmir, Turkey. I fixed the Vacuum pump with oil ring you recommended
and viola! spotless. Thanks a lot for that. For the exhaust problem I
mentioned earlier, it turned out to be the CAT, pieces fell in to the
muffler and started rattling noise. Now I am looking for the new CAT,
muffler and the pipes. Do you have any other recommendations other than
replacing it? Scotty mentions Laquer thinner on youtube?:))

BMTroubleU says:

Yea mate- this engine, and everything in it, is exactly what you have in
your car

astroboy Chew says:

LOL! Great advice! Now my E90 is a tad lighter! 🙂
