BMW E46 Exhaust Manifolds Install & First Engine Start Up! DIY #m54rebuild 28

BMW E46 Exhaust Manifolds Install & First Engine Start Up! DIY #m54rebuild 28

I began my rebuild when I did a compression test and noticed I had poor compression in cylinders 2-6 (about 142 psi, the bottom of the service limit). Cylinder 1 had 160 psi. A leakdown test showed leakage into each adjacent cylinder. Of course my engine also had the oil consumption problem (1 quart every 1000 miles) that every M54 engine has, which is caused by the oil rings which wear down prematurely (the M52TU used different oil rings which did not have this problem). There was also coolant loss, which I didn’t measure precisely.

dave eugene says:

I really need your help to figure out these codes that are coming up all at the same time. I have replaced the fuel filter with regulator and I've put in a new fuel pump. about 20K miles ago I installed Bosch plugs and coil packs, also replaced ALL O2 sensors, change oil every 7500, and air filter every 10k It's a E46 2001 325cic. Battery is only 2 years old but seems to have trouble holding a charge more than 5 days in a row without running. New alternator installed 5k miles ago and tests show out put at 14.1 to 14.4 volts. The smoke tests show NO (zero) air /vacuum leaks. despite all this I get the following codes: P0300, P1344, P1347, P1348, P1351, P1352, P0171, P0174….. all at the same time. The car starts but it barely runs, and I get a lot of smoke out the exhaust, and I don't trust it on the road. Can you Help ???? Please… You're one of the few people who knows the E46 well enough to figure this out.

If it's anyone I'm going to recommend, it'll be you.
THANKS 50SKID ! 😀

The Fixer says:

I'm surprised you didn't have them on when putting the engine back in. Just put my rebuilt m54b30 back in last week with the headers on. You just have to have the angle right and she drops right in.

Sfg Andersson says:

Great jobb from Sweden

James Brown says:

no gasket on the exhaust manifold ??

QUiKSR20 says:

So when throwing the head back on, Is it easier to attach the exhaust manifolds to the head off the car and drop in as a whole assy or is there not enough room?
I know It gets tight I know by those AC lines.. Just trying to find the easiest way to deal with the million header bolts lol.

Excellent job man! Recently bought a 2002 E46 330i Mtech2, and it had a lot of things to do, in brazil things are waaaaayyy harder to find and we live in another financial reality, things are much more expensive and our money is worth less, your videos really helped me a lot! Almost finishing my DIY rebuild, planning to do the first start on next few weeks! Thanks a lot for al this, its inspiring!!!

N-2-Stroke says:

Thanks for your great Videos… what do you think on the qualitiy of these pistons?

Best greethings from Germany.

Garrett Giuffre says:

That Milwaukee wrench is hacks and I wish I had known how much I needed this long ago

Arnold Rimmer says:

Looks very tricky under there, is it possible to remove the manifold header bolts from above the engine without removing the bottom engine mount and taking most of the exhaust apart ? This is the only part of job that's putting my off doing this job myself 🙁

Eric says:

i honestly wish you were my mechanic. you are my go to guy for anything m54 related as i own a 02 325ci, phenomenal job sir.
also, how much do you think i should pay for a job like this? head and valve gasket?

Danny Fraser says:

Gotta say the videos you make for people are really well made and obviously loads of thought put in to them ive fully enjoyed watching this project from the Hillarious pick up of the car with your Wife 😉 haha to this point here its hard to find very well made and recorded video such as this with good explanaitions in between and also highlighting mistakes made and lessons learned so Thank You From me for taking good time and effort to do them gonna watch the rest of this m54 build and see what else you have done nightly documentary material for me haha

Jose Rivera says:

46:51 is that ticking noise just a normal sound that m54 engines make? Because my 2004 325i with over 140k makes that same noise when it’s idling.

Herman lai says:

50sKid Hi my name bobbyherman form honk kong one question how to solve the smoking issue /stop smoking

HappyEveryDay says:

Cooooooool 😀 #lotofwork

Chris Johnson says:

I’ve installed headers on my car 3 times, and they smoke every time, idk why, even when I installed the same pair twice in a day

Dzidzai Chidumba says:

Thank you for inspiring and helping me to do a similar job on my 2001 E46 325i. Didnt start because we missed TDC with the VANOS rebuild, we used three dots on the camshaft instead on the line. Took it apart again and she is running fine, I cannot thank you enough.
