Genuinely feels great, can take the curves in the motorway so much faster now! My E39 will always suffer with a big heavy diesel engine up front but for now, it feels great! In the future I may replace the ARBs with thicker ones so hopefully I can get a more responsive feel on the road.

E39Source says:

Good to hear you found the problem! Compared to a snapped end link, it has to feel incredible!!

slughead says:

My 530d has felt like a boat for ages.. then last week I noticed the rollbar drop link had snapped. Quick change and I’m happy with the standard ones stiffness

E39Source says:

No no! I apologize for the miscommunication! I meant that MY questions seemed crazy. I’m sorry for the mix up. Please re-read my original comment, I’d like to help.

Atef Abu Saleem says:

???!!! I don’t feel that my question was crazy
I ask you the question because i know you are professional man
Anyway thanks again for your help and sure I will not ask you any more questions if you see me crazy

Actually I’m not entirely sure what would cause the door not to open. My guess is a broken cable somewhere in the door that isn’t allowing the latch to actually un-latch. That may be a mess to repair, good luck!

E39Source says:

This sounds like a stupid question on my part, but it is unlocked, correct? Make sure the little nub on the doorsill is 1/2 inch above the sill ledge. If it is, and it’s still not opening, you may need to remove the door handle from the inside to see if you can get control of the locking mechanism. I have done a lot with the locking mechanisms, so keep me posted. I’ll do my best to help! Good luck! -Colton

Thank you! I look forward to improving the aesthetics and mechanics of my car even more in the future! 🙂

Nice! I did this to my 528i a few years back and I agree definitely better feeling in the rear from stock. Will be doing this to my 540i in the future. Your car looks gorgeous! Love the e39 chassis!

Andrew, thank you for the information! I’ll keep it in mind for reference when I’m working on the suspension in future cars. Always good to hear differing opinions.

MINIzguy says:

Colt, the problem with understeer on E39’s is due to the lack of camber adjustment. On a MacPherson strut car, there is not much camber gain under compression. At the same time, the tire’s contact patch decreases as the car and tire rolls over. The fix for this is to reduce front roll, with a stiffer front bar, to regain this contact patch for more grip. This is my layman’s opinion on the subject from what I’ve read on car setup.

The proper way is a big front bar and a stiff rear spring rate.

E39Source says:

Hi Andrew, I upgraded the rear bar because as it was, the car had far too much understeer and it was very annoying. Unlike the M5, the 540 Sport from factory had a lot of understeer to account for driver error. This makes taking a corner very difficult at speed. At some point I may increase the thickness of the front bar as well, but only if I also increase the thickness of the rear. It’s good for now. I’ll keep that in mind for the future! Thanks!

MINIzguy says:

Colt, why did you upgrade the rear bar instead of the front bar?

From what I’ve been reading, it is more beneficial for a larger front bar than a larger rear bar to help with front grip.

E39Source says:

Will do! I’ve already done the passenger front, so I know the entire procedure. I can make a really easy DIY on it when the time comes!

Paolo Cosentino says:

ah, thats harsh. definitely make a DIY vid on it!

E39Source says:

It’s been that way since my ownership. When the PO owner owned the car, someone backed into it. Easy fix. I’ll replace the door shell down the road. Probably summer 2014.

Stephen Corun says:

I can imagine even the M5 sway bar would make a noticeable difference over the standard bar. I won mine from Eibach in a giveaway, so price didn’t really affect me. Lol

Paolo Cosentino says:

What happened to the door!?

ktraoui says:

WTF HAPPENED TO THE DOOR?!?

E39Source says:

The aftermarket sway bars increase performance even more, but for this car I went with an M5 rear sway for two reasons. One, being price. I wasn’t even planning to do the bar at this point in time until I found one locally in really good shape for $80. I couldn’t pass it up. Secondly, since the aftermarket bars are thicker, and thus flex less, they are more prone to snapping brackets. I simply don’t want to deal with that at this point. Thanks for the comment!

Stephen Corun says:

Quick and easy! So worth replacing with an aftermarket sway bar.
