Now I understand why in the procedure to bleed my diesel 2 liter engine of the 520d it says to put the temperature and fan to the maximum after filling in the new coolant.

Oops. I have no video of me bleeding my cooling system. 🙂

It is very easy for the M5 system since it is self-bleeding. All you have to do is to open up the heater core (max temperature, max fan speed and all zones are open) and rev the engine up to 2500 RPM.

Check my video (same one with a little more detail) since Ryan hasn’t edited in some new details I decided to add in for future reference.

Two years ago I had a similar problem with my 520d E39. The engine’s temperature never reached the middle of the gauge pointer. I then went to a car shop and replace it. A year later the water pump broke and I decided this time to do the repair in the BMW dealer. I agreed to do a complete replacement of thermostat + water pump because I was unsure of the quality of the thermostat that the car shop installed earlier. I’m looking forward to see how you drain the air from the coolant circuit.
