BMW E39 M5 Short Shift Gear Lever Shifter Quickshift Install DIY How To Guide

Welcome along to todays How To DIY guide video. In this video we will be looking at replacing the OEM gearknob for a brand new item and fitting a short shift kit. I’ll also explain how to change the gearbox linkage knuckle if yours is defective too from wear and tear.

Parts required for the installation are as follows, and all are available direct from BMW.

25112282403 – E39 M5 6 Speed illuminated gear knob.
25117546373 – E60 “short” gear lever.
25111220600 – Gear lever guide collar.
25117580281 – Gearbox knuckle linkage joint.
25111220439 – Nylon spacer ring. (You may not need these)

Fitment is very straight forward, but please take your time and ensure that everything is correctly installed and checked.

When working under the car, ensure it is safely supported at all times.

This also applies to any 5 speed E39. You can get a short shifter from eBay, the bottom hole will need drilling out a little bit. This is incase you wanted a threaded gear knob 🙂

Some say that only 545i lever is short and some say that every e60 no matter what the engine is, has the same gear lever. How is it really?
I've found a few of them for sale but all of them come from 2.0d or 2.0i.

A Bimmer tuner lied to me. I was informed that it would take 4 hours to install the short shifter kit and they would have to drop the transmission.

Thank you for your DIY video!

Excellent video, very clear and informative. I've just used it to swap out a horrific short shifter, back to standard with all new linkages. Cheers!
