I hear the same noise on my 2000 540i E39. It only has 99k miles on it. I
also notice sometimes when i start the engine, it makes a rather loud
rattling noise that only last for a couple of seconds then it goes away.
The car recently started misfiring pretty bad, so i’m getting ready to do
spark plugs then hopefully not have to do the coils.

brian williams says:

The rattling is probably your timing chains tensioners I would replace
those immediately

Thanks. Yep got some good info on checking fan clutch. Will check it out
today. I’m also going to get the tires re balanced as its been a couple of
months but the vibration really feels like its from the engine or maybe an
imbalance in the drive shaft however, I haven’t found anyone else
mentioning that issue. I will also try to look at the engine mounts but it
all feels quite solid at startup etc. No sir, no engine lights or error
codes on the obd2 reader so far.

Your inputs are Much appreciated!

Thanks Ryan. Any tips on how to check the fan cluth. I saw the m5 video on
vanos clean up. I belive my 540ia just has 2 vanos solenoids on either side
as opposed the m5 with 4 solenoids bunched on one pannel. Please correct me
if im wrong.

I only have an OBD2 bluetooth reader syned with the torque app (I know its
pretty basic). And it doesn’t show any error codes at the moment. Should I
have it scanned at a garage? Thanks

Hi eguys. E39 awesome video. Ive got a 01 e39 with 153k kms. Im the 2nd
owner. Previous owners seemed like they did everything by the book at the
dealership which is a good thing for me. I’ve started feeling a slight
engine vibration at certain rpms only. On idle it will do this vibration at
around 1000 to 1500 rpa and then beyond 2500 for a very short time. Rest of
the spectrum runs smooth as butter.

The engine has a typical slightl rattling noise. Yours is definitely a lot
louder.

For the vibrations I read up on forums. Easiest thing to check for is the
fan being off balance. Mine is fine. Now im down to spark plugs, solenoids
and the vanos sensor. The o2 sensors are also on the list.

I got some errors for the camshaft positioning sensor a couple of months
back when I went over 5k rpms gunning down some roads. It went away after I
cleared the codes a few times. So I didn’t bother changing the sensor.

Right now im thinking of just changing all spark plugs. Im also thinking of
cleaning all contacts on solenoids and the vanos sensors with contact
cleaner and then compressed air.

Any suggestions thoughts or comments are most welcome. Any awesome videos
on solenoid diagnosis please send me a link. Thank you guys happy new year
and happy driving. .

Thanks for the video. Gave me the balls to do it myself. love my 540i
touring!!

Agree…One sound is fuel injectors, they get quite noisy.THe other would be
the guides on your timing chain.YOU CAN DO IT yourself, just lookup the job
4hr job at your skill level.

E39Source says:

Alright, a few others suggest timing chain tensioner and guides. I’ll look
into it all! Thanks!

This is also a good time to look for leaking valve cover seal leaks. This
is a great engine well balanced. As for noise it seems like a vanos or worn
cam lobes problem. A good aftermarket repair shop can check for deflection
and pressurization using a BMW scan tool.

zhammmy says:

I’ve just changed mine this afternoon. I’ve found there was no need to
remove the top cover. Secondly, I decided NOT to remove the clips like you
did at 0:55. Just unfasten and CAREFULLY remove the 2 little nuts holding
the spark plug boot down, sweep the boot aside carefully, remove the old
spark plug, put in the new one, move on to the next one, that’s all.

E39Source says:

Colton here, I will be doing both of those within the next year or so. Stay
tuned!

Karem Gohar says:

Sorry forgot to tell u about air filter change and cleaning the idle
control valve and the air flow sensor

humblefumble1 says:

The first noise are the Vanos gears being warn. Need to have them fixed.
Second noise is the fuel injectors firing, that’s normal Colt!!!

E39Source says:

Alright! A few others suggest that I change my timing chain tensioner and
chain guides. I’ll look into that! Thanks for the comment!

MARSO920 says:

I had the same noise in my 2002 e39 540i and it end up being my water pump
maybe test the water pump

yeahman799 says:

Btw I own a 2001 740i.

propanemower13 says:

Yeah sounds like Vanos rattle like Ryan’s M5 makes and could possibly be a
lifter making noise along with the vanos. BMW uses high mileage oil change
intervals and sometimes tiny particles of sludge can reduce the flow of oil
to the lifters. The Rislone engine treatment smells very strong like it has
a good cleaner I would buy some of that next time you have to replace a
quart of oil. Then run it for a couple hundred miles change the oil and
replace another quart when filling it.

E39Source says:

Thanks for the comment! A few people say it sounds like the timing chains
slapping up against the engine. It very well could be that. I probably just
need a new timing chain tensioner and possibly guides!

only1balto says:

Step by step timing chain guides or clutch replacement 😉

CanBoChoChet says:

Timing chain tensioner is my two cents. If you did some research on Tube,
sure you would come across AskTheCarExpert, who live, breathe and Works for
BMW. A truly nice guy.

Karem Gohar says:

For the vibration and noise 1st engine mount change for the vibration , 2nd
recommended oil for this car i personally use shell helix or castrol edge
5w 40 for the noise , 3rd more pro you can remove the block head and clean
every cylinder

MINIzguy says:

With 229k miles, there will be a lot of worn parts. You may be on the
second life cycle on parts, since a lot can wear out in 100k and you’re
double that mileage.

Beast engine!!

AJM0201 says:

I have an e38 with the m62tu it sounds like vanos ticking. And you should
look into replacing the timing chain tensioner before the guides go out

E39Source says:

Okay! Thanks for the help! I’ll keep that in mind! Right now my oil is ever
so slightly over-filled, so I’ll wait, but I will definitely do that!

E39Source says:

E39Source has two chain tensioner DIY videos, one for a 540i and one for a
M5. I Just replaced mine in my M5 last night, it’s not too terrible of a
job.
