…(see other post)…which can be difficult. I have a video on how I have
done this on another vehicle by drilling into the mechanism and then
forcing it to open. This type of job is best done by the dealer or a repair
shop that is familiar with this failure due to the difficulty level. Let me
know if I can try to help further. Best wishes to you.

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello Annette, If the other doors are unlocking then the tumbler will not
correct the door that does not unlock. This is always a difficult situation
on a BMW. If you have tried the central lock/unlock button as well and it
does not unlock then the door lock actuator has failed in the double lock
position. The bad thing is that you need to remove the door panel while it
is closed. Sometimes the door panel is damaged during this removal. Then
the door lock actuator needs to be forced to open…

Hi I have an 03 X5 SUV. I ordered a new cylinder door lock, after watching
your video I think I won’t have a problem changing the cylinder, but wanted
to ask you a question. I put my key in and it turns smoothly with no clicks
either way. I can’t unlock the rear passenger doors now from inside either,
with the car off or on. Do you think if I switch out the cylinder this
would fix my problem?

AskTheCarExperts says:

This may be a failure of the tumbler or internal in the door latch where
the tumbler is inserted. The problem now is being locked out and opening a
double locked door. You may need a lock smith to open the door so you can
put the key in the ignition and use the central unlock button to unlock the
doors. In some cases a double pull of the inside handle will unlock the
double lock. Then the tumbler needs to be checked and replaced along with
the actuator if need be.

I think it is a 5mm allen head screw. It has a double detent so you often
have to pry it out with a pick so the threads catch again to remove it
fully.

this happens to my car just now. my remote key battery is dead. so i use to
manually unlock and lock the door by my key. but today when i tried to
unlock the door. nothings happened. i turn the key but i feel no resistance
like it used to be. the key jus spins. is this mean that my door lock
barrel went bad? i think my car is in the lock down mode. please help

tr4nscend says:

Hey thanks for the video. I know it is a LONG shot but can you post the
specifics of that screw? I mean the Allen.

AskTheCarExperts says:

Thanks for the addition Daniil. The screw does have two points in which the
threads catch. A hook tool like you used is a good way to get the second
thread point to catch. Thanks for the comment!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello Sue, I am glad it was helpful 🙂 Thank you for the great comment and
for watching!

When I turned my key a heard all kinds of things (spring and metal parts)
fall into the door, and i could pull the whole inside out of the door, what
do you recommend I should do? and is it possible to buy a new tumbler that
fits my current key?

Daniil Goss says:

If anyone has any problems taking the screw out from the side door panel
that connects to the lock (I know I did, I even thought that the screw was
stripped at first because at a certain point it just continued to spin with
no movement), just use a hook-like tool to pull the screw towards yourself,
while you carefully unscrew it and it should pop right out.

This is a common failure on the E46. If your key just spins without opening
the door then the door lock barrel is worn out or broken. My BMW Dealership
wanted $500 to replace it. Specialty shops around me wanted up to $300.
What they don’t tell you is the parts cost $30 & takes 10 easy minutes to
install!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Sweet 🙂 Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Thanks for the great comment 🙂

91hybrid says:

Walahh !! All done an excellent how to..

AskTheCarExperts says:

This procedure should be the same for your E39 🙂

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello and thanks for the great information and comment!

AskTheCarExperts says:

It sounds like the housing failed. Yes you can buy what BMW calls a “coded”
part for your vehicle. You need to order through the dealer using your VIN
and you will need your license and registration. The new tumbler will come
assembled and it will match your key as long as no change was made in the
past using parts from a different vehicle.

Your video was really helpful! Thanks for taking the time to post!

Mine doesnt turn either but its because its was cold and wouldnt turn. So i
put WD40 to loosen it but i didnt wait long enough and i turned and it
feels loose now. Would i do this procedure or could there be a different
problem with mine?

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, It would be worth taking it apart to see if the tumbler rod is
broken. I like the deicer they sell at part stores. It works really well. I
found it is better than wd40 for de-icing 🙂
