The VANOS is BMW’s version of variable valve timing. It advances or retards the intake and exhaust cams to pull more power out of the engine. It works by using oil pressure to move two pistons in or out and those pistons have o-ring seals in them. The OEM seals were made of buna rubber and they degraded over time. The replacement seals are made of viton and shouldn’t have the same problem.

John Barber says:

The outside sqare rings are Teflon and the orings are expanders to give pressure on the Teflon. similar to seals in a transmission for pistons and shaft seals

Hey 50's kid, thanks for your informative videos on bmw repairs! As a newer youtuber making detailed German car diy guides, it would be awesome if you can leave this comment up for others to see, and will return the favour in the future

Could you list all the tools I’ll need to do this job? (And maybe the most common tools you’ve used for bmw e46 repairs) I’ve just recently bought an e46 and I’m new to wrenching on cars. (Just turned 18 and before this car, I’ve really only done oil changes)

Thanks for making these how to videos. These jobs can be done with minimal tools. Its the knowledge that you pay for when going to a dealership for repairs. You have taken these E46 videos to a new level. Awesome!!!!!!!! Subscribed ages a go. Thanks

I'm having an issue with my m54 (M54b30 with an m52b28tu intake manifold) which I cannot for the life of me figure out. I am having terrible acceleration, with a code for my exhaust cam position sensor, and a rattle in my intake manifold around 2-3k rpm. I replaced the sensor, swapped the entire VANOS system with a known working one, and diagnosed that the rattle near the intake isn't the standard DISA failure. I am stumped. Should I clean out the VANOS solenoids even though I got it from my spare engine with working VANOS? If anyone has anything to ask or any knowledge about this please let me know. Thank you!

I just did this full rebuild and now I have a CEL – 69 VANOS inlet camshaft, tight or jammed. Anybody have a clue what it could be?

Alfred Navarro says:

I'm waiting on my order of the VANOS rebuild kit and the Camshaft sensors to overhaul. I greatly appreciate your videos.

Thanks for another great video! One thing is that I wanted to try and understand, is what is the difference between the stock and anti-rattle rings. I am just doing this job myself, and the only difference I am singing is that the new anti-rattle rings are 0.17mm thinner. All the other measurements are the same. Do I have the right rings or are the ones I got just the same as the stock almost?
Trying to better understand how they work to determine that.
Thanks!

András Csufor says:

Dear 50sKid. Thank you for the video. Can you or someone here tell me the article number of those two parts the ring and bearing which are not included in the repair kit?

valeri jankarashvili says:

The noise will disappear if I change the vanos kit?

Ivan M. says:

Very nice video as usual. I would say that adding the engine sound before and after the job would be the cherry on top of the cake. Thanks!

Busting Knuckles says:

What is the name of the cone that the tiny black screw screws into on the center of both sides ?

Rh Last Nae says:

When the metal looks caked of carbon oil it probably is not doing oil service on time and/or not using high quality synthetic oil.

Jonathon Hoggarth says:
