You can try the battery replacement and not glue it back together but just
assemble it back together with a new battery. If it works, then it was the
battery, if not it could be the circuit board and you would need to get a
new board. Make sure all leads from the circuit board are still soldered
(attached.)

Michael Scott says:

One question: why on earth wouldn’t you use the PROPER, rechargeable,
Panasonic 2020 battery? They are commonly available and cheap like borscht!

SpartanA31xx says:

hey mine was working sometimes but now has completely stopped do you think
its the battery or circuit board ?

Eric's random junk says:

Oh deep CR2016, just heard that. Any idea where I get rechargeable ones?

Eric's random junk says:

Where do you get the new button cells and what type?

1albertberman says:

DAN , a panasonic VL 2020 is a lithium rechargeable 3v battery that will
fit in this key

Dan Tsuchiya says:

Hi Paul, Great input, yes the 2025 will work.

Paul Soucy says:

Hi Dan, thanks for the video on replacing the battery on my E46 bmw 325CI.
that worked perfectly. My only issue, and this is for your information, I
could not find a 2020 battery any place. One person was kind enough to
reference another battery with the same size and voltage and that is a
2025. That worked perfectly on my key. So hopefully this helps you or
anyone else who cannot find a 2020 battery. Once again, thank you for
helping me out on replacing this battery and saving big dollars.

Lenore Waterman says:

Thanks…I was about to pay for a new key.

Dan Tsuchiya says:

Jacob, you may want to try an exacto knife, keep scrapping the groove with
a sharp blade like an exacto or new box cutter blade, it’s almost like you
are wearing through the factory glue or seal. It took me at least 15
minutes to get through mine and you have to do an entire side. It is a very
slow process. Two small jewelers flat bladed screwdrivers can also help to
pry open. Keep at it, good luck.

Jacob Marquis says:

i just spent around 15 minutes and couldnt get it to open

jmercado84 says:

I decided to give it a try before ordering a new key and it worked. BMW
wanted $400 for a new key that was cut and programmed. It’s so insane how
they are that greedy, probably knowing the original key could just need to
be reprogrammed.

Dan Tsuchiya says:

If you have a e46, you should have a standard key that you can use in the
lock on the door handle or on the back trunk. You battery is located right
rear in the trunk so you could charge it from there or replace the battery
and then operate the key fob. Good Luck.

Great vid,I have a barrel/tumbler problem..ie it’s beyond repair I think,so
I thought I’ll change the batt then use the remote method (I’ve been using
the key direct into the door) I went to get a batt, only to be told i
sould’nt & needed to go bmw for £150,a I can buy a batt for £3 so you’ve
saved me a lot of money, thanks mate!.

PlaidmanUTube says:

I have a 2001 740iL, they use the same key model. My battery had died so I
lost the programming of the key, thank you for the 5 turns, 3 key presses
trick, it worked! It could be that some people have actually lost the
programming and there key is actually fine. Before hacking it open they
should test this possibility first!

epse30 says:

Super clear, saved my bacon on a lock out situation!!! Beware of
overheating elements and having them separate from circuit board. Thank you
Dan!

BK2615 says:

Dan, I have a bigger problem, the key is not working and I can not get into
the car….the car battery is dead as well…how do I get in the car to
charge the car battery?

brickceo says:

If your circuit board is damaged when opening the case or removing the
battery, you can order a blank replacement key ($25- $60 online) and just
swap out the circuit boards. Worked like a charm.

Dan Tsuchiya says:

Glad it worked out well. For anyone opening up their key FOB just be
careful as the circuit board is hardwired so you have to handle with care.
Just work slowly and go in reverse when reassembling. My key fob separated
with household glue, but some epoxy or Gorilla Glue worked well, just don’t
use too much and clamp it well when setting up to dry.
