All BMWs Get Mechanically Totaled. This is One. Saving It!

This video is a start of a series where I save a BMW that was mechanically totaled out almost 6 months ago. This car had its turbo fail, the entire timing system and it has various oil leaks which would have cost more than it is worth to repair.

In this video I start the process of taking it apart to take the timing chain. This is a 2013 F30 328i with the N20 motor. If you weren’t aware the N20 has a common failure point which is the timing chain. They are also known for turbo failures. This holds true for the N26 as well.

In my opinion a car should last at least 10 years or 150K miles before it ends up costing more to repair than it’s worth. As a DIYer I didn’t want to see this car end up being parted out or scrapped with less than 100K miles on it and offered to repair it for a big savings to the owner provided they could let the car spend some time with me to film the process.

If you want to see a BMW get saved then tune in for this series.

Wonderful video and its good to see someone actually saving a N20. Honestly aside from the timing chain issue the N20 is a good engine. My pre lci N20 has been very good to me after the revisied timing chain put in and shes at 156k stage 2 FBO. Most people do not take care of there cars and honestly could give two shits, so when I see most people talk down on the N20 I really want to see the maintaince and care done for the car.

You are the best

Timing chains have warranty extension

Gilo H. says:

What do you think can be the cause of that problem? I got a B48 and some say that the problem persist on any B engine. Is it the oil change interval or quality of the chain, a heat problem or even the design of the engine it self or what?

I've seen other videos where people suggest to change that chain as a preventive maintenance at 150000 Km.

What do you think? Thanks a lot for your videos!

Grateful for your diy on this repair. My girl's x1 has this motor and it's a litte loud at start up at 75k so I know this may be a future repair I'm going to do.

Would you be able to do this timing chain job to mine? I have a 2013 528i. Mines running fine but I would like to do this job just for a peace of mind and avoid catastrophy in the future.

Would you be able to remove the crank hub without locking it by using an impact.

You are Awesome my friend…

Hang on I thought any F30 models built after March 2013 had the timing guide materials replaced for better ones?? That’s the reason I bought a 2013 328i F30 currently at 55,000 miles. Should I be worried??
