Replace Dipped Headlight bulb for Audi A4 B6 (2004)

In this video I change the dipped headlight bulb in an Audi A4 B6 (2004). You will need a T30 Torx bit socket, and the Bulb / Balast. In my case, I just need…

Thank you so much!!

Curro Paradela says:

Ok, so as far as I’ve seen around, this should be the same for the A3
(2005). Will try tomorrow morning. Thanks in advance for your effort
recording the video!! 😀

Gustavo Sahagun says:

I havent found yet a video for a B5, mines 2001 B5 but this looks very very
similar in the engine setup, air intake and so on would this video be
useful for me?

Carl Fxy says:

My wife has kept her Audi garaged since we got it, so perhaps that makes a
difference. I guess weather conditions are a bit more extreme in Canada
than here in the Midwest in anycase. Thanks for watching and taking the
time to share … I know where you’re coming from with the car being a pain
in the ass to repair, but I usually feel pretty good after being able to SO
OFTEN, like its gratifying that the car forces me to work on it all the
time…

Nick Schneider says:

Thank you! Changed my first headlamp today

Carl Fxy says:

oh to show you how ‘expert’ I am …I just fathomed, that when they say
xenon with the H7 bulbs … they mean xenon look … lol. You only get
xenon gas in the hid bulbs. I never bothered with HID upgrade, as I was
bothered with ballast, you know just another thing to go wrong, and I don’t
want to stun the deer around here, anymore than I have to 😉

Carl Fxy says:

Added annotation @ 4:40, thanks

Bill Roach says:

Thanks, just did this for my left (drivers) side. needed to buy a 3/8
extension for the 2 lower bolts. Saved me a few hundred instead of taking
it to the dealer

Bill Roach says:

2005 A4 B6. New light 21 bucks, 3/8 extension 9 bucks.

Carl Fxy says:

…cont…. you could just take the high beam bulb out and put it in the
dipped, until your new bulbs arrive. Hope this helps.

Yanan Xu says:

Hi, I just had the same problem last night. What’s the bulb called? Did you
find it in a auto part store or Amazon? Thanks a lot!

Carl Fxy says:

Thanks for the comment, and watching, AUDI A4 B6’s came with H7 high and
low beam bulbs as standard. A factory HID dipped beam option, was available
though. In this case you may find either D1S or D2S bulbs. If you look at
you log book codes you will see a code for that option, unless an owner
before you did the HID upgrade themselves. In anycase, my car (which is a
USP) uses H7 bulbs, for both Full and dipped beams, and in this case I was
changing the dipped beam light bulb.

Carl Fxy says:

Considering the cost of the D2s and D1s Bulbs I’d suggest anyone checking
before ordering, and if they find they have the standard they could just
replace the failed dipped bulb with the less frequently used Full beam,
whilst they wait for their el cheapo ebay bulbs 🙂

loksar47 says:

Y u no have xenon? 🙁

Mike Roedig says:

Many thanks for the video…saved dollars better spent on a new pair of
running shoes!

Carl Fxy says:

In my case H7 55W Xenon 5000k. You can find a pair on ebay for $5.99 that
work fine search for “H7 55W Xenon HID Hyper White” those are the cheapest
for north america and they come pretty fast from California. But, check
your owner manual for what type of bulb you should get. Commonly, HID-D2S
or HID-D1S bulbs are used for the factory HID upgrade. If you’re not the
original owner, you will have to pull the headlight unit out to check
before you purchase. If you find you have the H7 then ….

Jonathan Est says:

amazing. thanks mate. i had a hassle trying to do this. i see that on your
title you put 2004 and u only did three bolts. i have a 2002 b6 and there
was a fourth bolt right where that annotation about it.

Carl Fxy says:

I think you meant to say ‘unreliable’ 🙂

schwantz037 says:

Useful vid, would never have found that 4th bolt without
watching….Cheers…

E'raan Lue says:

wd 40, releaseall and all the others i’ve tried, nothing works, i had to
drill out 2 broken bolts mending the windscreen wipers

Moonshine3333 says:

Brilliant. Many thanks. You’ve just saved me a lot of hassle.

Carl Fxy says:

H7 55W Halogen. I just picked up a pair from xenonhidshop on ebay for $4
shipped, the shipping was quick like 4 days from ca to mo, so pretty quick.
If you pick out your bulb get 4000-5000k as that is the whitest light.
6000k+ gets blue and less visible, and below 4k similarly yellow. Also, you
should open up your headlight and check out the bulb, to make sure. Also it
doesnt hurt to swap bulbs, to make sure htats the problem, and not balast
(if you have it.) …but at $4 just order a couple now

Carl Fxy says:

My bulb was completely out, in fact my drivers side has just gone out also.
I never experienced intermittent loss of headlight. Are you sure you don’t
have Xenon’s and the ballast is failing ? To debug without dealer fee’s try
swapping drivers and passenger side kit (bulbs / ballast) to see if the
problem switches sides. Good luck

Carl Fxy says:

4k-5k is where you want to be, so you would be fine with those 4k bulbs,
above or below that color temperature you lose lumens (output) so you wont
see as much. They just use a bit of blue glass I think to make them look
xenon like. Now if you have a bulb out, just pick up a hid kit and throw it
in if that’s the way you want to go, I haven’t done it so Im pretty much in
the same boat as you when it comes to bulbs and color. I think you can pick
up a kit for around $50-$70 for each dip/full/fog

ooooooooo7 says:

Quick question, what type of lighting is the bulb? Is it a 4000k? 5000k?
And also what type of bulb is it? H11 or H9?

Carl Fxy says:

Thanks for the comment, I had read that there should be four bolts, as you
said the fourth should be quite easy to locate under the air intake, which
you can remove with by unscrewing the two phillips head screws just above
the radiator. My car is an Ultrasport, so I suspect this is why it only has
3 (as does the Cabriolet).

Ryno Meyer says:

Thanx man! saved me a trip to mechanic and a bunch of money 🙂

EiRESKuLL says:

Well done man no other vids on this.

Carl Fxy says:

No, dipped headlight. However same process to remove and change. Just
remove headlight and pull out blown bulb, so you can make sure you buy the
right replacement.

Carl Fxy says:

Wait until your coolant flange goes at the back of the engine, a garage
will charge you $500+ to change it when with effort and girly small arms
you can get it done for $40 !! Ours let go catastrophically and lost all
the coolant which had me freaked out as I had just done the fuel pump and
thought it was dumping fuel

Tazioman says:

Thanks, but I had to cut my wrist twice half way threw the video. Sound was
like nails on a chalk board. And the camera work was crap. Nice try but not
Jamer Cameron quality yet

E'raan Lue says:

i’ve owned a bmw and a mercedes too, not so much rust built up, audis are
just too reliable to drive in canada.

dave hall says:

all this for a fucking bulb! car makers need hanging!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom Kuegler says:

Thank you for the helpful video

B. Rackham says:

Was your headlight completely out before you replaced it? When I take my
old bulb out (Not lit) and put it back in it will stay on but then shuts
off after driving for awhile.

Ed Bernier says:

Thanks. I always forget exactly where the hidden screw is that requires the
long torx driver. Your video does a great job showing where it is.

Carl Fxy says:

Thanks for watching, and letting me know it was useful Tom.

Heckflosse says:

Thanks! Just what I needed!

Dyflinn says:

Thanks. The first step should be 1. remove tthe nice watch to avoid
scratching it and your car!

ooooooooo7 says:

wow i thought it was a 4000K bulb lol good thing i didnt buy them. See i
want my headlights to have the most bluest but legal light on them and i
want my foglights to be like a 30,000K color. in order to do this i need to
install a HID kit right?

Ian Brewster says:

What a mission to change a light bulb, audi are money grabbing c**ts !!

Carl Fxy says:

Yep, I just had my other side bulb go out myself. I didn’t swap out both
bulbs last time and I should have, as when one goes the other will follow
in shortly after (for me a year but still). Remember to pick up a T30 Torx
if you dont have one. You can pick up a set for $7 in walmart, or a T-30
screwdriver for $5 in autozone. Good luck…

E'raan Lue says:

mate your bolts look so fresh after so many years, if you live in canada
like i do, every bolt is rusted dead in place. pain in my ass mending my
audi.

Carl Fxy says:

Got an Audi, want to know how to change a Halogen H7 light, then check out
my video.

riverratwookie says:

Thanks for the tips. For others there is also a fourth torx screw on the rhs

Woody407407 says:

Good video! When I read in my owner’s manual that audi recommend taking it
to a dealer to have a light bulb changed, I laughed my head off! A
dealer?!?! I DON’T THINK SO SOMEHOW…

Joshuabrutl says:

I love how Audi made the headlight assembly easily removed, most cars you
gotta take the bumper out and that’s a pain in the ass , making the head
separate and put outside the bumper made a usual 45 minute job a 10-20 min
job

TheMisternyan says:

This video was a lifesaver! That 3rd (hidden) screw was a serious
pain-in-the-butt. Only difference that i experienced with my A4 was that I
couldn’t completely pull the headlight assembly out. Could only move it
like 4-5 inches. Seems like my power cable was shorter than yours. Took a
little finesse, but still got the bulb switched out anyway. Thanks!
