►The turbocharged V6 under the hood of all B9-based Audi S4s and S5s is one of the great modern engines. However, it is prone to a common fault within its cooling system that can compromise the engine’s health if left unaddressed. The most comprehensive fix is to replace the water pump, thermostat, and coolant shut-off valve, along with their associated seals and gaskets. That’ll prevent the catastrophic event of coolant entering the vacuum system and reaching places it shouldn’t ever be.
Audi updated its mechanical water pump during production, so earlier models will have to be retrofitted with the new pump. Luckily, the most significant change involves only a new pump pulley, making the update quick and relatively inexpensive. That said, replacing all these components is a fairly involved job, so we’ve broken the process down into two parts.
In this video, FCP Euro’s In-House Technician, Rusty Herten, removes the old water pump, thermostat, and coolant shut-off valve from an Audi B9 S5 Sportback.

11:50 I have that on my vehicle but it fell out in pieces when I pulled the grill. This is a great time to find the car had been in an accident (car fax didn't mention) and a good portion of the front end parts are broken. Must have been a home job. I guess I can add even more $$ to this job. I'm already changing idlers and belts with this job.
Is it same steps for RS5?
Another note- a chunk of people will disconnect the vac lines to the WP at the N75 solenoid to just prevent this from ever happening
Good walkthrough. You should have upgraded the intercooler while you were in there. 🙂
We need more DIY for Audi because they are stupid with those prices
Thank you so much for making a tutorial on this! There are literally 0 good ones out there for us DIYers.
