I retract my previous statement about not having to remove the egr valve
(at least the driver’s side).
On my 03 allroad I had no issues removing and installing the plugs without
removing anything else. I just tried to help a friend with 2000 a6 2.7t
last night and we were not able to get the new cap in with the egr valve in
place. We will have to loosen this from the back of the head to give us
enough clearance to get the new cap in.
cam plugs and valve cover / cam chain tensioner seals all tend to leak. Cam
plugs are easier to change and cheaper, so I’d suggest doing those first.
If you still have issues with oil leaks, then do the valve cover gaskets
and camchain tensioner seals.
There’s no need to remove the erg valve, or loosen the heat shield to
replace the drivers side cam cap seal. I just replaced mine yesterday, and
after struggling in the attempt to remove the erg, I said heck with that
and just removed and replaced the cap with it in. It’s tight, but easy
enough to replace. The passenger side erg was removed, but that side is a
piece of cake. Tip: For easy of replacement, put the new caps in the
freezer. Pressing them in is a breeze when they are cold.

Sweet…thanks for posting!
After changing the camcap seal, no more oil leaks no more burning oil smell.
So was there any more oil burning after that? I’m having the same problem
on my 2001.5 s4 w/ manual tranny.
