2008 Acura RDX Oil Change Procedure

Here’s how to change your own oil on a 1st generation Acura RDX. Mine is a 2008. The process is very simple: 1) Buy 5 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W-30 motor…

Mark Andrews – Yes, you will need to use jacks to get under an RDX. It’s a
crossover and sits fairly low. I jack her up on the frame jack points just
behind the front wheels and then slide stanchions in place next to the
jacks and then lower the jacks, putting the weight of the vehicle on the
stanchions – this is the safest way to hold the vehicle. The jacks are kept
in place but only with minor tension on the frame, with the stanchions
bearing most of the load.

Eric Spencer – Regarding filling the oil filter so as to not disrupt oil
flow to the turbo… I read the manual and consulted with some techs at
Acura about this. It is not necessary (unless you change your oil
immediately after aggressive driving while the turbo is at high temp. I
wait for my engine to cool completely before beginning the oil change so,
no damage will occur to the turbo. What will damage a turbo is heat without
oil to lube and cool. If the turbo is room temp and runs at idle without
oil for a minute, no problem.

Changbrothers – as for a brake fluid change video… I haven’t done one
yet. Really, brake fluid changes should be done at 100-120K miles or if you
overheat your brakes (on a massive downhill for example) and boil your
brake fluid in extreme heating from aggressive braking. Once you boil brake
fluid it loses its properties and braking becomes dangerous.

William Begoyan says:

That big jug, is not Mobil 1. Mobil Super is the is XOM’s standard line,
Mobil 1 is the premium line. Mobil Super Syn is synthetic, but Mobil 1 is a
higher grade synthetic.

Cheap filters can have weak/poor core and can construction, resulting in a
chance of collapsing filters (only 1 in a 1000, but do you really want to
be that 1000th person?). Mid-priced filters offer best value (like Bosh,
and PureONE, and standard K&N)

Not replacing a 50 cent crush washer is just being stingy.

Marin Yaple Mejia says:

Thanks for the video, you’re saving me a lot of money! Unrelated to the oil
change, do you know how to change the thermostat in a ’08 RDX?

rhyls aperocho says:

Hey man just wonderin if you know how much transmission fluid is there on
the tranny?i’ve ask honda said it was 3 or minimum 4quarts just want to
hear from you since we have the same model & year., tnx man

Wolfgang51501986 says:

I’ll do a video on this with next oil change. It is easy. Instructions from
the manual: 1) Turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position. 2) Press
the SEL/RESET button on the steering wheel until you see the engine oil
life display. 3) Press and hold the SEL/RESET button on the steering wheel
for more than 10 seconds. The remaining engine oil life reset mode will be
shown on the multi-information display. 4) Press the SEL/RESET button once
more to select “RESET”

Mark Andrews says:

Did you have to jack your car to get underneath? Thanks

Kenji Chang says:

How do you turn off the “Due for service” message? Can you do a brake fluid
change video next time? Thanks!

Wolfgang51501986 says:

Yes. As a crossover, the RDX has a fairly low profile and needs to be
raised to get under there with enough space to remove the pan bolt with a
wrench and the oil filter with enough elbow room. I jack it to max jack
height and then bring the chassis to rest on stanchions then apply a small
amount of jack pressure so that the stanchions and jacks are holding the
load (redundant safety).

Bao Philip says:

Thanks for the info! Really helpful!

Sebastian Setio says:

where is the oil filter located?

Eric Spencer says:

Good video, forgot one big thing. The Acura 2008 RDX is a turbo charged
motor, the oil filter should be filled with oil before you install it in
the car.

Wolfgang51501986 says:

It is located on the backside of the oil pan… very easy to find by
feeling or looking.
