2008 Acura MDX Transmission Fluid Change 1080P

2008 Acura MDX Transmission Fluid Change 1080P

I wanted to show a video on how to change transmission fluid my style, also adding some commentary. I took out an extra 2 qts, which I didn’t show.

I agree with castrol import as long as you’re out of the powertrain
warranty.

Kham Srilasak says:

Video is great except for the initial part regarding the hoses. I’m not
clear on which hose you disconnected and which end. When I go under the
car, I notice the bottom and top hose as you stated but do I disconnect the
tube of the bottom one where it connects there or the other end?

DanaClary2013 says:

Did a 3+ quart tranny fluid change last night using this method. We got the
two hoses backwards to start, so spilled about 1/2 quart on the garage
floor. No problem. Reversed and pumped about 3 quarts out and replaced –
piece of cake. Performed all B13 maintenance items and the MDX is purring
like a kitten. Running cool and smooth! I don’t think this is the
recommended method, so I make no guarantees, but this was easy. Thanks for
this video!

tumdeax says:

I will do all that when my maintenance calender comes to those things. But
until then, I am rebuilding a transmission for my 2003 MDX so stay tuned.

frontier1701 says:

Then I stand corrected.. I do use your technique for draining and filling,
except I only do 2 quarts and add 2 qts at a time.. I’m to chicken to do 4
at a time.. I do it every 5000 miles and my ATF is always clean.. Some
Audi’s and Volvo’s dont take kindly to general brands.. I went thru 3 AT’s
in my 2000 Acura 3.2TL.. Total junk

frontier1701 says:

Good, I didn’t know you were a Chemical Engineer… you saved $15 to risk a
$4000 transmission overhaul… A reasonable gamble..

Revo77 says:

Hi toy, I am about to do an ATF fluid change on my acura mdx and was
wondering if this video was applicable since its 4 years newer? Anything
different I need to know? Thanks!

tumdeax says:

All you had to do was remove the plastic shroud underneath. That’s what I
did. Sorry If I didn’t mention it.

Kris0S says:

Tumdeax, thanks for taking the time to share you experience. Few questions
please: since you remove only some oil at a time through this method, would
this not mix old oil with new? just like using the drain plug method?
Therefore, is it bad to let ALL the oil come out in one shot? Also: ignore
people who criticize unconstructively, don’t even reply to them. Thanks
again!

tumdeax says:

No, it wouldn’t mix the old with the new. The reason is the transmission is
compartmentalized. The gears and valve body is inside the bell-housing.
That oil can be drained via the drain plug. But the rest is inside the TC
and cooler/cooler lines. Therefore the fluid travels pan-> valve body ->
TC-> out to cooler. trolls are no problem.. making a witty comeback makes
the fuck off. Sometimes. (- _-)

peter w says:

great video. but if you disconnect the return line (going back into the
tranny), and drain out of it, wouldn’t you get the same results? thanks.

tumdeax says:

I hate answer questions this way, but it really depends. How experienced
are you? do you have a lift or are you working on the ground? Have you done
transmissions before? I worked on my first trans with a mech, and I made a
ton of errors on my first attempt, if it wasn’t for his help I wouldn’t be
using the car today.

lineartechbd1600 says:

Also, do you think you could damage the tranny by removing 4 whole quarts
at a time?

Jerry Chan says:

Thanks for your informative video. How difficult is it to drop the
transmission while on jack stands? I have experience with repairing the
transmission on a smaller vehicle (Toyota Matrix), but am a bit nervous on
my wife’s 2004 MDX. She’s got a the infamous torque converter shuddering
problem and the dealer wants $2800 to repair. Thanks

tumdeax says:

@DanaClary2013 Its not the recommened method, but it is easier. But why
take out only 3 qts? it should be the entire 9 qts +1.

SirNicholasD says:

I stopped the video when I saw the 12 year old kid start talking about
trannys

toy96 says:

dealer doesn’t make anything, there over priced products are garbage, in
fact every time I go to my local dealership nobody is ever there!

tumdeax says:

You don’t need to add oil from the dipstick pipe, there is a hex plug under
the intake hose. The advice was free, as always.

Chanh Phung says:

Thank so much again Tumdeax Chanh Phung

tino phiathep says:

Hey bro..i have a 2004 acura mdx. By the way, great vid. But I can’t make
out where those trans hoses are located in your vid. And can you do a valve
adjustment vid on the mdx. I need to do mine, its running very rough. and
for some reason when i was changing out coil pack i have oil on the top of
the coil pack harness, any idea where those oil is coming from..maybe spark
plug oring seal, valve cover gasket. but anyway can you do a valve
adjusting vids. thanks bro. I will subscribe and like.

joe b says:

you have to use ATF – Z1 (ATF – DW1 is now a replacement for Z1) for acura
vehicles….all of the other brands are gonna destroy your transmission.
acura transmission is really sensitive and this is the biggest problem of
acura…Be careful and good luck.

hardgrain says:

How did you disconnect the that transmission hose?

mynsxt6 says:

Try Eric the Car Guy, he has lots of mechanic video and one on replacing
the brake fluid too

Chanh Phung says:

Hi Tumdeax Thank so much for the video.I follow what you did and I change
my 2002 MDX transmission fluid with no problem I also used Castrol
transmission oil .The only thing I used the “Oil Pump ” ($6.00 from auto
part) to pump the fluid to the dipstick pipe of the transmission .Any way
job well done, thanks again Do you have Paypal account?I want to give some
money for my appreciation Chanh

tumdeax says:

nope, it is inside the transmission housing. You can thank Honda for that.
GO to my channel and watch” inside a honda transmission ” to see what I
mean.

tumdeax says:

just a little, the actual level varies depending on the gear and torque
converter. A .5 qt. +/- is about right.

tumdeax says:

Wait until you see my transmission rebuild video I am in the process of
filming. I posted a video (unfortunately no sound) on how Honda’s has
installed filters inside the trans housing, unserviceable. That is why the
trans usually dies. I can guarantee that if you removed the filters and
added a cooler, then you will never have to change the trans again.

tumdeax says:

Well I can’t do a valve adj. myself, but you can look on the mdxers.org
forum or YT. After removing the plastic shroud you should see them on the
driver’s side. As for the oily plugs, check out this video to see if it
matches your description. YT search this: “Fixing Oil Covered Spark Plugs”
by Scotty Kilmer. This should help.

Revo77 says:

Thanks for the vid tumdeax, was wondering if you could post a video for
changing brake fluid or knew how much an ’04 mdx would take? I’ve been
looking around the net but am not finding it. I have a lot of repairs to do
and am just getting tired and overloaded. thanks. Also, a fuel injection
cleaning video would be awesome if you need that done on your own MDX. If
not no worries, thanks again.

Jason Lee says:

and never use castrol, you’ve gotta use genuine honda/acura fluid.***

EJConrad says:

4:11 is not free advice. But nice vid outside of that.

toy96 says:

Thanks can you show some additional videos, suggestions: 1. Coolant
replacement/flush. 2. Spark Plug replacement. 3. General tune up every
100K. thanks!

bobl78 says:

you didn´t change the filter ?

tumdeax says:

actually your in luck, I bought a brake bleeder the other day to do the
job. I most likely will make a video soon.

Dblade981 says:

Nice video man!

tumdeax says:

it says on the castrol label it’s Z1 compatible.

lineartechbd1600 says:

if you disconnected the other hose and put it into a bottle of new fluid,
would it suck up the new fluid? Does this transmission just push out fluid
through the output hose or does it push out and suck at the same time. I
was thinking of just putting 8 quarts into a bucket and letting the
transmission suck up the new fluid. If not, i was thinking about
pressurizing an 8quart bottle of new fluid and force it in with air
pressure. Do you think that would work?

Upallnight says:

If you had remove the out line from the tran cooler you could have flush
the trans cooler at the same time instead of retaining the old ATF in the
trans cooler.
