How to: Ford Mondeo & Focus (Duratec HE) thermostat replace

Simple DIY how to: changing the thermostat on a Ford Duratec HE engine. The car featured is a Ford Mondeo Mk3 (2000–2007) but the procedure is much the same for any car using the Duratec HE, e.g. the Focus Mk2.

something like: "yo, maybe there was a better way of draining it"

How do you stop over revving when taking off from lights or intersections when in gear. But not in gauge just now and again. Is this Clutch or motor problem. Email me at Ac Pro Jumpstart in Christchurch New Zealand. acprojumpstart@gmail.com It was left hand drive and has been changed for right hand for our country just a great car and though just brought it I am not familiar with this motor. Thank you, it helped alot! We managed to remove the hoses before removing the thermostat. Got a bit nervous when the plastic arms on the old thermostat was intact, but it had failed in some other way 🙂

Stibam elgrin says:

Very nice video. However the connector on the thermostat housing is not live while the ignition is off. So you dont have to the battery terminal off. Some people might not have their radio code available.

RDCST says:

¿The electrical connection is the temperature sensor? I mean the one that go to the ECU/PCM and then to the dashboard.
Do you know how many temperature sensor this engine has?

C F says:

Hi Craig,
Thank you ever so much for your great video. Quick question I have a dilemma, my gauge indicator is in the middle but the diagnostic computer on the dashboard reads me the temperature of 59 C, so which one to believe?

T N says:

I just did this on a 2008 Focus SE (USA model). On mine, I also needed to remove the transmission dipstick tube in order to get clearance to remove the intake manifold. This was per the Ford maintenance book I bought online for $15 (it's a CD with the service manual, worth every penny). And the manual is right, it wasn't possible to get any clearance until I removed it. There are two bolts. First follow the line down with your hand under the throttle body area and wiring harnesses. There is a bolt securing the tube there. Then, under the car, reach a hand up on top of transmission housing and find where the tube enters it, and the bolt right next to it that secures the tube to top of transmission. Undo that one (by feel alone). Finally, shimmy the tube back and forth while pulling up with some strength to free it from the housing. Oh, and make sure you clean around the area with a rag FIRST to minimize debris entering the transmission from that open hole. To get back in, have a friend push and shimmy from above while you guide into the hole from below the vehicle, again by feel. It's a little frustrating but possible.

Cheers, you have helped many people Craig

My duratec 1.8L petrol only gets up to around 70-75C degrees so I guess I need to replace my thermostat.

do you know why there is an electrical connection on the thermostat? I found some replacement thermostats for my car that don't have them.

Gaiajohan says:

My car (Volvo C30 with this Duratec engine) heats up to 76C max (obd reader), I haven't seen any warmer. On the autobahn driving high speeds, the temperature goes down to like 60C something (it's about 5C outside now). The last couple of weeks the car heats up slowly and fuel economy has worsened.
The temperature dial is in the middle when temp is 74C. (Probably always between 74and102 I guess).
Seems to be the thermostat I guess?

Jens B. says:

Just replaced the thermostat on my Mondeo. Same problem with the broken plastic arms. Thanks for your helpful video! Greetings from Germany.

darkwaterblue says:

Love the Mk3 but not a massive fan of this engine.

Thermostat breaks exactly like yours. And it is not cheap to replace.
EGR gets bunged up and throws error codes. Again not cheap.
Swirl flaps can munch the engine.
One in the family had piston ring failure at about 80K miles.

Shame as it was a nice car to drive.

David Mandziuk says:

Sucks to be you. Reason #5,327 to keep a old focus. Buy a new car, ha fuck that

Stu B says:

Good video. Have you thought about replacing an oil cooler thermostat, if your car has one fitted. I know that failure of one of these can cause over-cooling problems. What do you think?

Vedy Alex says:

It was soo hard without taking the evacuation gallery off!!! Just changed mine today thanks to you, also put new antifreeze (didn't need to flush cause my thermostat had a tiny crack so I lost 1 liter per day, and I put in only distiled water). It works like a charm! Thanks again man!

john doe says:

hi Craig, great videos.
I need to do a cylinder head repair on my 2.0L petrol 2005 Mondeo.
I was wondering if you have or may know about a vid that show the process.
I am more looking at the disassembeling/assembeling part of the work.
I will probebly give the engine head to the shop for professional work.
Please advice.
Thanks.
