Anyway, in this video I show you how to replace the oil pan gasket on an E46 BMW. You will need an engine support bar to do this job, such as this one:

Here are the important things to know:
* If you have an automatic transmission, there are ATF cooler lines running from the trans up to the ATF cooler which is underneath the expansion tank. These lines are held to the oil pan with a bracket, but they are also held to the transmission with a bracket. You should unscrew both brackets to make it easier to get them out of the way.
There are 21 short bolts, 2 medium bolts, 2 long bolts, and 3 e-torx bolts holding the oil pan on. Make sure you get them all out before you start banging or prying on the oil pan.
Other than that, it’s not too difficult.
One other thing you might want to install while you have the oil pan off is this:
Secured Oil Pump Nut Kit for BMW 6-Cylinder
It prevents your oil pump nut from loosening and coming off. This is really only a problem for the 3.0 engine and mostly for racers who spend a large amount of time at the upper RPM range (nobody knows exactly what speed) where a sympathetic vibration develops and causes the nut to loosen.

Would a bit of hightac make placing that gasket a lot easier, or is that just going to prevent a good seal?
Help. I removed all bolts 21short,2 medium and 3 torx..pan is stuck in place will not drop/come off. Tried prying, pulling and a mallet…anyone have similar problem? 50's kid let me known..thanks

Your videos are the best. I appreciate all of your information and teaching. Curious have you ever had to replace a broken stud on the oil sensor? I over torque and broke a stud. Now I can’t seem to drill out the broken one. I am running it with only 2 nuts tighten on the oil sensor. No leaks yet, but waiting on the leak to start. Any suggestions?

Another tip; once you take any component off during the disassembly process, screw the bolts back into the holes. That way you won’t lose the bolts or get confused later on as to which one goes where. It will save you a lot of time in the long run.

At 32:41, what were you torquing to 81ft lbs? Also, how were you able to lower the jack after lifting the subframe back up? Seemed like it would just fall again….I know I'm just missing how it works.
I have a 2002 BMW 325ci with an oil pan leak and valve cover leak. I also have a rear differential leak and coolant leak…….you'd think a car brand like BMW wouldn't leak everywhere. it started leaking at the 8 year mark and no matter how many times you seal the valve covers they leak again
after 8 years there will always be some kind of stain on your garage floor as long as you own the car. it's just a BMW fact
