Those top bolts are the biggest pain to get out if you don’t have the correct know how!
This 2004 Lincoln Navigator was stuck off of US 27 in Haines City at the Loves gas station. This wasn’t planned but the gentleman heard me loading up my tools and asked for a ✋ hand.
This is a short and sweet video on how to get the top bolt out.
This also works on 1998-2005 Ford Expeditions 4.6 and 5.4 Triton.
Possibly also on Cobra Mustangs from 1996-2000 5.0 quad cam.
Those figures may be a bit off, but the process should be similar.
The bottom two and the wires that connect the solenoid are self explanatory.
many Ford enthusiastic, recommend to not out the top bolt back in according to multiple forums. Yet, some do, and for good reason.
Better grounding
Proper flywheel to gear contact
Factor setting

Awesome man! I can tell you love your job
Its not that hard to replace the starter. From the bottom of the car, I just used two 3" long extensions, a 1/2 extension and a 13mm socket.
Not that complicated, get the car up on some jack stands so you have room to maneuver and you can get at it with a 6 inch extension and a deep 13mm on a 3/8 drive. I am absolutely no mechanic, and I had mine out and replaced in 25 minutes.
Thanks Pat – good job! By any chance, do you have any tricks to help me with removing my starter – 07 Expedition. The starter stud that had the negative wire mounted, should be removed with a deep 13mm socket. However, a 13mm is too big for it and a 12mm is too small. Not sure if someone previously replaced it, but the space is very limited to use anything else. Help anyone???
Why does our starter keep smoking my husband replaced it about 3xs already.
I'm about to help a friend do this now on their 00 expedition thanks for the info great video I liked it shared and I'm hitting subscribe my brotha
You're a genius, Pat! I tried a couple other methods, but your LONG extension method was the one that worked right away. I watched a LOT of videos and you're the only one using this method. You saw it here first! Thanks, man – you saved lots of choice words.
I just had got my 2nd stater put on..and sometimes my truck turn..what do u think it is?
