Its a shame honda made it a bit of a pain to get to, but that extended bolt
at the back of the starter was a nice idea 🙂

Sometimes the commutator and carbon brushes are fine, the high current
plate switch at the end of the solinoid travel can get burnt up and the
motor just doesnt get power properly, it can also be tempremental, as you
sort of said, the solenoid pulls back on a pivoted fork and pushes the
drive gear into mesh with flywheel as well.
