lets say you just found Mr Subaru- and your 2016 outback has never had cvt service- what would you do at 100,000 miles?
There is a ton of studies or youtube videos showing that regardless of what oil you choose as long as they are API certified you are fine. The more expensive oil is for other specific application but engine protection is the same.
My question is what if you don't drive a lot? You say to change CVT fluid around 30k miles but i work from home and even with a couple of trips every year it's going to be a long road to 30k. My current car is a 9 year old HRV with 29k, if that tells you anything, and I'm considering a new Crosstrek. So for the cvt specifically is there a time interval to follow as there is for oil changes?
@MrSubaru1387 what happens if you haven't changed cvt or diff fluids and are now sitting at 135K on the odometer? Is it too late to change the fluid now? Our 2015 Forester is still running like a dream and getting low-mid 30's mpg, but I believed the dealer on the cvt and diff fluids.

did my research and two weeks ago bought a 2007 Forextser X 125K miles … took to a dealer and got a $19K repair estimate … just wasted my $1600 and another $600 in new radiator and now will replace the PS pump and hoses before I take it back to the auction knowing the next buyer will have bought a better car than me … I was so looking forward to becoming a Sub loyalist and hobbiest but the more YT vids I watch these cars are simply mechinicly NOT WELL DESIGNED or engineered !!!! … Im out
I learned the 'lifetime warranty' bs way back in the early computer days. It broke down after only few years and when I called the company on it they said – 'lifetime is only as long as we decide it is" – I'm not joking. Nothing has changed.
I’m confused , everybody , shop I’ve called is different. I bought a 2015 Outback 3.6r, I’m currently around 98,000 what recommendations for car, cvt, differential, I’m all about preventative maintenance!

When operating Motor Vehicle in super cold climate is it a good idea to change oil more frequently?
Subaru suggest changing synthetic oil every 10,000 km would it be a better idea to change oil every 8000 km instead or sooner? What do you recommend for those of us who use our Subaru in harsh conditions? If we want to get most life out of the engine as possible.
The rule of some that I always have heard that one should check their oil every second gas fill up at the pump.

Bought '19 Forester in Feb 2025, 65k mileage, 2 owners before me. I did oil changes and diagnostics in official dealership. I asked several times "guys, I need to replace cvt fluid, previous owners never did this". "Nothing to worry about! Your cvt fluid is life-long and fine. We'll not replace it". Today, I am replacing the whole cvt in independent transmission workshop. Subaru is great. Subaru dealer in Belmont MA is stupid MF
Funny thing. I own a 2017 Impreza. I noticed engine pinging for a little while which I ignored at first. Finally decided to research it and found out that the Impreza fb20d has a pretty high compression rate. I also did further research and saw a lot of 5th gen imp owners put in 91 octane. So decided to switch over and now the pinging is gone. I can’t explain this as Subaru states that they tuned the car for good gas mileage and only needs 87 but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that my pinging went away shortly after switching to 91.
So my question is, do you recommend a CVT drain and fill or flush and fill? I have heard that doing a flush and fill can stir up deposits and ruin your transmission but a drain and fill only replaces and portion of your fluid and not all of it. Is any of this true and which do you recommend?
The only oils I have ever chagnged in my car is the engine oil. I was oblivious to the fact that the others needed changing. Luckily, I have also never had any problems with the vehicles.

Change the trans fluid 30k, oil at 5K.
My father had a '92 Nissan brand new, drove it to over 400,000 miles using nothing but Mobil One and changing every 10,000 miles.
His commute was 2 hours in the morning and 2 plus hours back home at highway speeds.

Sounds like the lesson is to not buy a Subaru.
Subaru not caring about maintenance and reliability after the warranty expires is a giant middle finger to potential repeat customers.

Question. I have 2025 Forrester. It recommends 0w-16, which seems to be available in my area only from Subaru. Am I ok with using 0w-20 full synthetic oil? I am using the Subaru OEM Oil Filter.
I do routine maintenance on my 2012 legacy 2.5i , 6spd however I get a weird noise on decel when shifting , same with my 2004 forester , also 2.5 with a manual transmission. Anyone else experience this?

STi is actually at the dealership to get my diffs and trans fluid changed. Pricey, but don't have the ramps yet.
I wish getting plugs changed wasn't 475 bucks, that's a bit crazy.
On my 2017 Outback Limited 2.5 rainstorm came while left sunroof ajar. Interior was wet. Heavy rain. When noticed I drove it with no power issues. Two days a later at the after keeping sunroof closed went to drive it. The parking brake was disabled and gave warning on dash with a brake line that illumated. Never seen before. After raising console cover to dry connectors using fan on to help dr out under console for24 hrs. Parking brake still disabled. Still could start vehicle. Have simple Innova scanner. Did scan for ABS and gave code C-1957. Referred to LH actuator. Then check all fuses and both rear connectors at actuators. All were good. Then aft r starting to check with code scanner few more times doing resets disconnecting neg terminal , the ignition was disabled. Nostalgic ting now. Vehicle was towed Subaru Dealer in LittleRock,Ar. They’ve had it several days. Best I can tell techs were unabled to diagnose. Of coarse it’s the weekend and I’m told Monday may diagnosis? Now sure they are busy and backed up. From my description possible you diagnose or give an idea what the issue could be here? Vehicle has 90267 miles. Had for 2 years and put 10000 miles on it well maintained since I’ve had it.
I’m looking at a 2013 Subaru and it seems like there’s something wrong something we’re not quite sure what it is dragging Transmision or something. Do you have any recommendations? It’s got 180,000 on it.
