If you're anticipating running into loose metal fragments you want 1000% should have gloves on. I'm glad you admitted it, but please wear gloves when continuing to work further in situations like this. Metal slavers / splinters in the hand is never a good time especially if it gets infected. Using the right tool for the right job is equally as important if not less important than using the right PPE.
