►Like many modern European engines, Porsche’s 9A1 engine family in the 991.1 Carreras relies on a mechanical vacuum pump to provide the negative pressure needed for the brake booster and actuation of cooling system components. When it fails, you lose vacuum, triggering cooling system warning codes and creating a very firm brake pedal. Neither is good for your Porsche, so you’ll want to park the vehicle until you can replace it.

The vacuum pump bolts to the cylinder head and uses one of the cams to drive it. It’s a universal system every major Euro manufacturer uses or has used, so it’s fairly reliable. Unfortunately, they can become an annoying oil leak, a common problem in Porsche’s 991 and 981 vehicles.
