Just a quick video showing how I replaced the Automatic Transmission Shift Cable Bushing that holds the cable on the stud for the Gear Selector. The owner was stranded in a parking lot and the car wouldn’t go into gear. He said that when he shifted to park the vehicle kept rolling after he took his foot off the brake. He ended up stopping against the curb, so it may have still been in drive, not park as I had mentioned.
What I didn’t tell you in the video, is that I had recently replaced a bent lower control arm on the driver’s side and in order to do that job, I had to lower the subframe a little and lift the engine and transmission a little in order to get out one of the bolts. This is what probably caused the worn out shift cable bushing to come off (or moved it enough to come off a few days later) since it was probably stressed or moved a little too much for the old crumbly bushing. The bushings do get old and wear out or come apart, and it seems to be a common problem for this particular vehicle even without me doing that work that probably caused this to happen. I let the owner know all of this and I didn’t charge him for this quick and easy fix. If you recently had your lower control arm replaced or any work that would cause your engine to be lifted up and your corolla will not shift gears, it’s possible that you have this same problem.

My son's toyota (2005, 211k miles) wouldn't start (no noise, no clicking, battery good), towed to the repair shop and they said $450 for new starter, I bought a new starter and installed myself for $125 and car still wouldn't start. When cleaning up and putting stuff in the trunk, noticed the car could roll even though transmission was in park. Went to adjust the gear changer lever and it was like floating and that is when we found your video and like came to the root of the problem, the shift cable busing was worn off with car in Neutral (and that is why it wouldn't start – everthing else was OK). Wish my son would have told me the gear changer was a bit weird and could have gotten away with a $15 bushing and 5 minute fix vs. what we did, but got to it eventually. Thanks!!
Is it possible to put an E-clip over the pin so that it can't fall off if the bushing fails again? I see many aftermarket replacements that come with E-clips, so I was wondering if they'd fit a Corolla.

Your console is different than my wife’s 2006 Matrix XR. The shifter part of the console is not attached to the arm rest portion. So I’m hoping all looks the same or close to it under the shifter.
Hey I just want to say thank you so much for this video. IT JUST HAPPENED this morning in my car. And it did the trick I LOVE YOU SO MUCH
You never have to be stranded for this part being bad. Just pop the cover off, you can feel the cable and slip it over the shifter pin. Then simply hold your finger on the cable to hold it over the shifter as you shift. Mine has been bad for over a month and I'm getting by doing the 2 handed shift for now. I do have the part now, so today might be the day I fix it. No need to call a tow truck, or be stranded, just have to use 2 hands, 1 to hold the cable on the shifter, and 1 to operate the shifter. It's a PITA, but you're not stranded and don't have to Uber to school or work until it's fixed. Some even use a zip tie to hold the cable in place. I'm not that much redneck, so I'll do what I do until I fix it.
