As an electrical engineer I find car wiring appalling.
Ehat’s happening. 6 times again?
How did the owner change the alternator two years ago in a 2026 Lexus?
So many bad connections are and can be a headache thanks.
Here's were all the customers problem started, him! If you don't know what you're doing, don't do it!
Fifth element
Almost cracked the screen hitting the button
If that doesn’t take almost every kid back that was born before the internet. Hold the damn light
Always, always, always double check everything you touched when you work on something then start having issues afterward.
You were so fervent that I went and hit the button SIX TIMES! Nothing changed though, as I was already subbed.
That terminal was screaming out “I’m your problem lady”. Bad connection. Clean it up to shiny metal. Test the cables and retest.
Disturbing a broken car, and having it become unbroken without isolating and confirming a fault, is always a gamble. But I think you're safe with this one based on that heat marking.
Vrry good energy coming from you guys. Really enjoying your videos!
With the evidence of excessive heat on that terminal, you should have replaced the entire power center and the battery positive wire that feeds it.
Cleaning the terminals does not repair the heat tempering of these connections.
I would expect a voltage drop in the future.
Great work guys for digging in. For others 18V doesn’t mean it’s charging at all. You can have 18v and zero amps. Never go by just voltage for alternators. Yes you need the preside above 12.6 to 14.6 approx but need amps to see if actually charging and the ramp of RPM vs amps and bolts. Drop test on nut and bolt would have nailed it like Eric O. Lesson from this is don’t use battery tools to remove electrical nuts and so volt drop test on the nut.
That one stupid nut was loose? Crazy!
Great video, and as a DIY car guy, this is my new favorite channel. Great detective work and there is no murder involved. As a retired electronics test engineer I love that you guys are using 'scopes to figure things out. In this case I think I would have just used an ohmmeter to measure where the high resistance point was without putting the battery back in. But I understand that you are also in a teaching mode about the usefulness of the scope; and want a before and after view. The scorch mark was the "smoking gun", for sure.
I had the alternator in a 2002 Chevy Tracker with a bad ground for its regulator. Cleaned it and used aluminum electrical paste on the connection. Al my problems went away. Next time you see evidence of heating around a connection, clean it completely, reattach and check again. Saves time. It took me a long time to find mine as it appeared to be in the external wiring.
Should have listened to Eric O and tested for voltage drop at the cable eye, nut, and stud. Great video though!
17:01 "battery, Aziz" is the funny line in 1994 True Lies
With an 18v output, if the alternator lived for any decent length of time I'm kinda surprised the battery doesn't look like a balloon. But there're a lot variables here that could keep that from happening.
you guys ever pull your 500k givy
