How to Replace SRS Airbag Control Unit in Kia Sportage

In this video, I’ll show you how to replace the SRS airbag control module in a 4th generation Kia Sportage.

The SRS Control Module (SRSCM) in Kia Sportage is a critical safety computer in your vehicle. It constantly monitors impact sensors, detects collisions, and controls airbag deployment at the exact right moment. Because of its importance, this job requires patience, attention to detail, and strict safety precautions.

On this Kia Sportage, the airbag control unit is located deep in the center of the cabin, underneath the floor center console, directly below the front console tray. Due to this location, the entire floor center console must be removed to gain proper access to the module.

In this video, I walk you through the complete step-by-step process, starting with safely disconnecting the battery, removing the gear knob and center console trim, disconnecting wiring harnesses, removing the rear AC duct, and finally accessing and replacing the SRS airbag control unit itself.

The SRS airbag control unit is not plug-and-play. After installation, the replacement module must be programmed using a compatible diagnostic scanner. This process is known as ACU variant coding, and without it, the airbag system will not function correctly.

This guide is intended for educational purposes and for experienced DIYers who are comfortable working around vehicle safety systems. Always follow proper safety procedures when working on airbags.
