When we first heard about Hyundai requiring a computer connection complete with subscription software to perform a simple rear brake pad service, it was via a video by @louisrossman, and to be honest we thought he might have been mistaken since he’s not an actual hands on mechanic. But, we did just a little digging, and as it turns out this is actually the case with current model years Ionic 5 EVs.
The fear here, is that if Hyundai can get away with this on this one model, there is nothing to stop any manufacturer from incorporating in any vehicle, this locking the little guy shop and DIY mechanic out of performing the most basic and common maintenance and repairs.

Sounds like John Deere. F them, keep that pile of dog sheet.
I'll never have this problem . My vehicles have ash trays .
I miss flatheads.
Stop buying iphone vehicles with more connectivity than common sense features. Buy used and keep them running with junkyard parts if you must. CAN Bus interfaces in the 2000s started this crazy trend.
coupla beers into your video, but you raise important issues that, I think, aren’t isolated to just Hyundai. The addition of logic control (ECUs, TCUs, and other control modules) make the modern car a network of computers. I spent a work lifetime in the computer industry, and a lot of engineering time doing embedded computer control for mechanical systems, and what you are seeing is mission creep ie. well we can now capture 1000s of operating parameters, let’s add a few more….(ha-ha, how about this one, Nigel?) this was a predictable outcome, sad to say…..
NEVER going to buy Hyundai or Kia!!!!
Out of Control I am mechanic I have a California BAR license I'm a licensed registered mechanic which I have to be in the state of living otherwise I go to jail for working on cars and charging money I have tried in a hurry to push the button for the parking brake going downhill at very low speeds and it Kix you out and it won't let you do it it will not lock up the rear brakes So it is a parking brake not an emergency brake which is a kind of an issue Welcome to the state of cancer that causes California10 more than John Deere been doing this s*** with tractorsAnd trailers For a long time
Yet another reason why I'm glad I got rid of my Kia.(Hyundai in different clothes) It did still have a manual ebrake/parking brake but this is getting out of control.
It’s just a different world we’re living in. I don’t like it but we have to accept it. There’s no stopping it.
Volkswagen started this with the electric parking brake requiring scan tool access to do the rear brakes. It was only a matter of time before someone added an extra layer of software to screw with the hardware. The greed is out of hand, and it is time to bite that hand mercilessly. All of the people leasing cars endlessly without servicing them brought this upon us. They are happy to own nothing, but the rest of us aren't. Now, the only customers the car companies want are the leasers.

This is a blessing in disguise, Hyundais and KIAs are some of the most unreliable cars built! Stay away, for many reasons. However this issue is not going away. Definitely a scumbag move. Thanks for raising the flag.
You will own nothing, a be happy you're taking public transportation, and renting $600 sneakers!! Edit, when your at work someone else will be wearing your shoes!! It's only fair you share your personal property!!
Ha! Next thing you know they will outlaw oil changes on your own vehicle.
