In this video, I replace the rear drive unit in a 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 RWD after it starts intermittently shutting down, usually once it gets hot. With over 153,000 miles on the odometer and an ~$8,000 dealer quote for a new motor, I source a low-mileage used drive unit and tackle the swap myself.
Follow along as I drop the entire rear subframe, disconnect the high-voltage and coolant connections, separate the integrated axle and wheel-bearing assemblies, install the replacement drive unit, and put everything back together.

Just stating the obvious but an EV motor should last more than 4 years. Hopefully you can figure out what happened to this.
Great video. I hope you'll do a teardown of the old motor to identify the cause of the fault & check the condition of the motor generally.
Good grief! That's a lot of work for one person. I hope you're staying safe during the dangerous parts and fork lift use, at least letting someone know to check on you if they haven't heard you swear in a couple hours! Insulation faults should be easily tested with hipot device.

22:20. You call those brackets 'in the way.' I would look at it from a safety standpoint as those flared brackets supplying emergency support so the rear motor doesn't fall right out if the bolts fail.
Wow, bravo for such a massive undertaking to get that out! I'd like to hope this isn't an ongoing issue with Hyundai motors as 2022 isn't that old.
Is there, or would it be valuable to have a list/video showing how to disconnect all the different electrical connections found on these vehicles ?
I think oil change, coolant change,12v battery , brake fluid change and most important air conditioning efficiency as much of the electronic components need cooling.
Wow, that looks like $8,000 worth of work to me. No wonder the dealer wanted so much to fix it.
lol leave it to kia/hyundai to figure out how to make an ev drive motor fail at 150k miles like clockwork.
gen1 volts go 450-480k miles before blowing a coil
gen2 volts around 300k
early bolts around 690k miles (before the covid oil cooler delete)
not the first early korean ev drive train failure ive seen u cover….
3:38 if the insulation degradation is between phase to phase, then it wouldn't be an isolation fault, which is measured between HV and chassis
If i remember correctly there was a issue with oil cooling electric pump with caused overheating with no fault code.
By the way, always similar looking thumbnails so I often thought it was the video I already watched and skipping.

Owning an Ioniq 5, I'd have expected a motor to exceed 150k miles.
Also the US spec 22MY is quite different to our 24MY UK spec car. Ours has steel lower arms, with aerodynamic blades on them, but the US vehicle has alloy lower arms, and no aero attachments. Ours also has vented rear rotors, not solid as this US version has.
The interior is different too, and ours has a power tailgate, but that might just be a model spec difference.
