Ford CEO Jim Farley recently claimed that many modern vehicle repairs are simply too dangerous for consumers. At the same time, President Trump revealed that Ford and GM representatives visited the White House to discuss right to repair issues.

In this interview, I sit down with Nate from NextGen Drivetrain to discuss the growing battle over vehicle ownership, repair restrictions, connected car technology, driver monitoring systems, vehicle data collection, and why automakers continue fighting independent repair shops and DIY mechanics.

Are modern vehicles really too dangerous to repair, or is something else going on?

We discuss:

• Trump’s comments on Ford and GM
• Jim Farley’s controversial repair statements
• The future of right to repair
• Vehicle surveillance and driver monitoring
• Connected car data collection
• Independent repair shops
• Why the average age of vehicles keeps increasing
• Whether consumers truly own their vehicles anymore

Let us know what you think in the comments.

stop buying crap new trucks.

@CalvinSmith-p4e says:

I build car and trucks for a living. we can build one you can drive and work on ( If You Want). Build to order and when you leave you wont be comming back for endless Check Engine lights and waiting months for a body module that soon, if not already, won't exisist in the future. Imagine trying to find modules for a vehicle 5 to 10 years old. Most dealers wont stock any parts 10 years or more old. Dealers wont even take a vehicle older than ten years because they know parts are hard to come up with and certinly not a dealer part.

@tonylam-u1t says:

From YYZ. Forget the hype, just let auto makers do what they want. We had right to repair now for well over a century and we will not let them change so easily. John Deere was mentioned by a comment below, I bet they already regretting it as the effects are now felt at their board room. Germans/Canadian /Japanese makes are now eating their lunch. We can switch again, and from what I hear, dealer show rooms and lots are now saturated with pick up trucks. Here is the public demand, we want a simpler pick up truck with less electronics inside. We are the customers and we write the cheques. One year with a filled show room not enough, lets drag it out a couple more years.

@MidnightOilsRestoration says:

Nate is exactly right, and we ALL need to shift our mindsets to NOT put up with this sh1t! Going along with this stuff is why we are in the situation we are currently in! STOP being a bunch of pansies and start standing up for your rights! You have a constitution that LISTS THE LAWS THAT MUST BE ENFORCED…it is YOUR DUTY TO DEMAND THE LAW ENFORCEMENT IN YOUR AREA DEFENDS AND PROTECTS THE CONSTITUTION THEY SWORE TO OPHOLD! Do it!

@petergoodspeed5716 says:

All new vehicles are junk only a fool will buy them

@shawnwillis6496 says:

We make the cars so why do we need GM, OR FORD?

@johnnybravo7161 says:

Better watch what you sign to if you’re a dealership mechanic looking to open your own shop to for a no compete clause they’ll try to hide to

@Travis-w6c says:

It's such a relief to know I will never be spending even 1 cent of money ever again on purchasing a new car. Truly this is such a relief as these cars are so insanely expensive. Knowing from this point onwards I will only by used 90's or earlier cars that are simple to maintain and work on and can't collect data on me or my family and don't have emissions control systems that prematurely ruin the engine, this is truly a relief. So much money saved that I can spend on other things. Thanks car corporations you've saved me so much and also your cars are ugly as he'll these days so I won't have to look at the disgusting bloated things sitting in my driveway either.

@tonyod123 says:

I have a 2016 Ford.
Been to a garage once in 10 years for a timing belt change.

@tonyod123 says:

People who buy new cars, don't buy used cars. Those who buy used cars have no choice but to buy the cars the new buyers bought.

@bluemenace04 says:

It baffles me that as long as these industries have existed, they still can't figure out that their "services" are simply unaffordable. Why do these mechanics that don't work for these manufacturers seem to have more business than them? Because theyre a much more cheaper alternative that allows us to fix our car and drive it to work just a while longer. I'll be frank, if my truck broke down and i had to take it ford or brand named business, i couldn't afford the repairs and this truck would just be some yard ornament and I'd be walking to work. In no sane world should we be forced to take out ANY loan to fix a part or 2.

@GoddessOfMisfortune says:

Buy used and buy japanese. Stop buying american cars, period. They do not care about competition, they just want to sell new cars that break down as soon as possible.

@Cal-j8j says:

We can't even go back to da Moon….not that we ever did. The whole system is Demonic

@BadKitty-y3s says:

I’m not buying a New GM or Ford.

@reallybadaim118 says:

@krazied1gamingchannel170 says:

Hyuandi, kia, and genesis all have frony facing cameras and they collect and sell your data

@animeniac978 says:

If the switch in your door fails, you may not be able to reverse at all. Stuck in your driveway, need a tow truck to get on the road!

@stephenb9940 says:

@kendalgee5808 says:
