Service Brake System fix – GM Chevy GMC Cadillac EBCM Electronic Brake Control Module

Service Brake System fix – GM Chevy GMC Cadillac EBCM Electronic Brake Control Module

Service Brake System message on your dash? If you have a full size truck or SUV made by General Motors (Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac – and perhaps even other vehicles made by GM) most likely the solder on the relay inside your “Electronic Brake Control Module” or EBCM has partially failed. The fix is easy. Getting the part off the car is the hardest part. Make sure to clean off those Torx screws as they are difficult to remove and any dirt will make it even more difficult.

I read somewhere need re apply thermal heatsink compound. Where would that be applied?

Everyone keeps mentioning the “brake booster” as if it’s a conventional vacuum assisted power brake system. It is not. All of these trucks use Hydroboost, which uses spool valves integrated with the power steering pump to to power the brake “assist”. These are great systems and very reliable, and very powerful, and do not rely on engine sourced vacuum. A hard pedal usually indicates that part of the hydroboost system is malfunctioning, giving zero assistance. . A soft pedal ONLY when engine is running is generally going to be air in the system post ABS pump. Take note: brake fluid pressure created by your pedal force is not DIRECTLY applied to the caliper pistons. It is passed through the ABS pump, which takes the incoming pressure, and meters it to the four wheels as needed for optimum stability and braking efficiency. My Suburban has shown me the incredible power the brakes have on reserve in an emergency situation. One time an older gentleman pulled almost directly out in front of me while he was leaving a church parking lot in light traffic. He was going so slowly as he pulled out that I couldn’t really veer in front of him because there were a few cars to my left, oh, and I was pulling 3,000 lbs of trailer with no trailer brakes. I couldn’t veer behind him as that would have brought me dangerously close to entering the church parking lot, possibly airborne, with lots of carnage, uneven levels, brick pillars, other pedestrians and cars, you name it. All I could do was stand on the brakes. They did lock for a split second but ultimately I was prepared for an impact yet that never happened. Great trucks these GMT800s. Technically the long versions are GMT 900s.

Mine seems to come and go when it’s wet out. I went to the car wash and it was gone when I started the truck back up, but came back about a half mile down the road. Same thing usually happens when it’s raining.

Had to replace the instrument cluster on an 04 chevy avalanche it then decided to say service brake booster

@michaelmauro9335 says:

You can disconnect those 3 electrical connections plug them back in and it will reset your abs lights . So you probably just reset them .

@streets12501 says:

i know this was posted awhile ago but hoping for some direction i replaced all lines bled the breaks alot i ran 2 bigger bottles through it bleeding all 4 corners today about 2 weeks later i get the brake message on dash pedal still firm but with loss of braking power where should i look could it be the ebcm?

@ezradormady8209 says:

What code was the vehicle sending?

@michaelbyfield6323 says:

Mine is so messed up that it's throwing a 4×4 code as well computer can't read anything and it won't start won't even try to turn over and the battery drains within 10 minutes or so. I'm going to do the same to mine and hopefully that fixes it

@lowkeymark-y8w says:

Electronic brake system issues can be a nightmare, but solid tools like Vdiagtool really help narrow things down. Appreciate how clear this video was!

@lucas2424mc says:

Ok so i have changed master cylinder, brake booster, bled my brake lines at every turn with vaccuum and manually theres no air in my system. Spingey brakes all the way to the floor.
Stiff when truck is off the minute truck is on they are soft sponget and to the floor. Have to manually pump them to try and build enough pressure to stop.
HELP!!!

So my Yukon reads check brake system across the dashboard but no lights or on ??

@carlsexton1166 says:

Useless video

@idiotluggage says:

Thanks for sharing this. Will be trying it on Friday.

@bloomerb4162 says:

You need a bit of solder on the iron tip to help transfer the heat.
I reflowed mine and still have the parking brake light and service brake system on dash.

@aaronvilla13 says:

Would this cause the transmission to down shift to help you brake?

@santoslandscaping55 says:

I did this on mine but unfortunately the brake light went out but the ABS is still on

@okidokidiego5783 says:

Sorry my men,I got the same crazy situación but I do not know if that is my problem,I got just abs on but I instal all brake lines and now I got code where said,wheel sensors missing,selenoid error,etc etc

@oheyyall1559 says:

I just had my booster replaced less than a month ago and it worked just fine after that up until today. My breaks stiffened and the service brake system came up on my dash….what could be the issue?!?!

@shaneintegra says:

Needa raise the temp on your soldering iron. If you have to sit there n wait… its too cold n you can actually do damage to the board as your heating the whole thing up. Higher heat instantly melts the solder and the heat doesnt have enough time to travel

@samking3920 says:

Pulling the abs fuse also cures abs gremlins

@jimw8016 says:

I would consider liking this video but… having to listen to your theories, complaints & rants just to get to the relative data scattered through the video will prevent that. A more focused & concise instructional video is what's needed.

@WYLDBILL says:

My pedal went to the floor and the warming came on and I figured a brake line busted again but there's no leaks I can find anywhere.

@just.browsing says:

Now how do you fix the issue where i cant see the PRND?

@Junk_and_disorderly says:

What size torx?
