1998 – 2002 GM OBS Truck Crank No Start EVO Passlock Module Diagnosis Repair U1000 DTC (Chevy & GMC)

1998 – 2002 GM OBS Truck Crank No Start EVO Passlock Module Diagnosis Repair U1000 DTC (Chevy & GMC)

In this video we will be going thru a crank no start situation with a U1000 DTC and the Security lamp lit on the instrument cluster. This is a very specific failure ultimately tied to the EVO/Passlock Module. We go thru how to isolate the problem to this particular EVO Passlock module, then how to diagnose whether the problem is in the wiring harness or the EVO Passlock module itself. Finally we show how to replace and reprogram the EVO/Passlock module to complete the DTC U1000 repair and allow the engine to start. The U1000 is a class II communications error DTC.

The truck illustrated is a 1999 Chevrolet K1500 Suburban LT, but the procedure will be the same for any 1998 thru 2002 OBS truck or SUV. Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, and Holden for Cheyenne, Escalade, Silverado, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Sierra, and W/T trucks across C1500, K1500, C2500, K2500, C3500, and K3500 ratings. Fitment for model year 2000 is limited to Cadillac Escalade, and Chevrolet Tahoe Limited/Z71. The 3500HD for models years 2001 and 2002 would also be applicable for this repair video.

i changed the lock cylinder on my truck because it was getting hard to turn the key, now it wont run the security light flashes only for a few seconds then goes out and doesn't come back solid or continue flashing. it starts for a second then dies security light flashes for like 2-5 seconds doesn't come back solid or continues flashing while in the run postion after i crank it… i tried doing the relearn but i didnt bump the starter each time like you did. if you can help me out

@supercub-m8m says:

Hey, everyone. I have a 1999 that has a security light that stays on. And it’ll turn over for about two seconds and then stop never starting so my question is does my 99 Pick up truck with a 454 in it have a separate EVO for the passlock or is that tied in to ignition where the key goes in?

@christskingdom8950 says:

So, I have a 1999 2 door Tahoe and had this crank no start issue but my after market alarm remote start still worked. I wasn’t receiving a “security” warning until a few weeks of this crank no start bypass via remote start issue. When I finally saw the “security” warning, I could not even start with the remote start. Cleared the code and got it to start both key and remote a few times. Then I saw on YouTube that if I could get it started, and while started, I could unplug the security box, then I could bypass it all together. It worked for the remote start but not the key. The relay is fine and I replaced the ignition but that didn’t correct it. The only thing left to do is clear the security code again. If that fails, any suggestions? I can attempt to do what you suggest and have it rebuilt.

@WreckDiver99 says:

Mine blinks the security, then it goes out. THEN when I turn the key I lose all power. I do hear a "CLUNK" at the firewall when it loses all power. I also had the classic "start for 3 seconds, then die" which pointed to Passlock issues. I could reset the system quickly by disconnecting the negative battery cable and re-connecting, but now? It just goes direct to "KILL ALL POWER"…won't even attempt to crank.

LOVE my 1999 Tahoe, but now? It's something new every freaking week it seems. I don't want to lose this truck, but it's hitting me up for a few hundred bucks every freaking 2 weeks it seems. 🙁

@mtwz71 says:

I’m not sure if it hurts anything but, I completely took my EVO module out. I started the truck and while it was running I unplugged the EVO module. My security light stays off and now my truck starts every time. No more crack and die issues. I’ve had the EVO module unplugged for over a year now and my truck has never given me any problems again. 1999 K1500 GMC 5.7 auto. I’ve sure the security system is disabled now with the module missing and I’m not worried about that. I’m just glad it starts and I don’t have to be worried about being stranded anymore.

hello again:

Dr. Skock or viewers (whoever likes to answer)

That day came, I discovered that the EVO system, although it is new and improves the feeling of a harder steering wheel when driving at high speed on the road, is not viable in the long term.

The replacement maintenance of the HWSS sensor (scarce and expensive) and the part: Variable Assist Steering actuator, only give more pressure load to the Power Steering Pump, marking the tracks of the HOUSING ASM, PUMP where it makes its stroke of the: VALVE ASM, CONTROL
and the truth is they are not so cheap Power Steering Pump and the time to assemble and disassemble + material.

(taken from the service manual book c/k 1998, section: 2B1B-2 POWER STEERING PUMP UNIT REPAIR)

Now I understand why GM released an official service kit P/N# 19168825

which I already acquired.

the question is:

Will there be a way to reprogram EVO/Passlock Module to cancel the EVO function and not mark the code-fault due to the missing actuator,

or if the EVO/Passlock Module fails in the future, replace the module without the EVO that is pure passlock

how certain vehicles are applied: Vehicles that are 15,000 GVW (RPO C5B)

do not have an EVO actuator assembly on the power steering pump.

Thank you for your attention.
