In this video we work through the challenges associated with installing an aftermarket radio in an 2004 Audi A4. We don’t often work on german vehicles so were taken by surprise when there was no switched 12v available. We now know must german cars will require a smart harness as the radio is told to turn on via CAN BUS but if you want to skip the smart harness this video can help you find a 12v switched source to power your radio when you turn on the vehicle.

How did you remove the piece of trim above the radio? When you start the dash part of the video, that piece is already removed.
Why soo difficult, just make a new wire from the fusebox to the radio as Switched,
legenddddd saved me trying to get my aftermarket radio working in my audi tt. same plug has the switched 12v, don’t think it’s the same wire though. cheers for the video 🙂

I ran my wire to the cigarette plug. Did you have issues with radio shutting off when volume gets high
So glad I found this video! Was scratching my head when I wasn't getting power to my aftermarket head unit. I tested it and it was good and made my life much easier with you fellas showing us what 12v switched wire to tap! Appreciate the video and thorough instructions!

What wire did you hook to the climate control? The red or ground wire?
