Be sure to watch our videos on how to remove, replace and re-install the rotor if you’re interested. Second generations Insight are model years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014. The removal process of these components are actually very similar on Acura & Honda vehicles such as the Accord, Civic, Element, Fit, CRV, Odyssey & Pilot.
There a a few reasons why you might want to remove these parts. You might want to replace the worn out brake pads, rotor, clean the caliper piston, replace the knuckle / spindle assembly or replacing the ABS speed sensor.
Brake jobs seem easy enough: Remove a couple of bolts, spray some cleaner, and replace the worn-out pads, right? Not quite: There are some important steps and precautions that the average backyard mechanic neglects, not just on Hondas, but on any vehicle.
After you’ve removed the lug nut bolts and the wheel, next you need to remove the caliper from the knuckle assemble. There are four bolts on most Honda calipers: two bolts connect the caliper to the car, and two bolts connecting the two parts of the caliper.
Inspect the caliper bracket (the part that holds the pads in place), and remove the pads. Remove the clips from the caliper bracket and look under them.
If your brake pads come out of the calipers hard or you have to beat them out, chances are the rust has in fact built up under these clips.
Removing brake rotors on a Honda is not easy. They are held on by two small screws. These screws can be removed with a tool called an impact driver. If it’s possible, heat the screws up with a torch, which will help removal process.
Reinstalling the Brake Pads and Rotors
Be sure the caliper shims are installed correctly and the brake pads are installed properly. Two of the brake pads wiill have a metal tab called a wear indicator.
Torque all bolts to spec, and check to make sure you did not twist the rubber brake line during installation.
Honda Insight:
The Honda Insight is a hybrid electric vehicle that was manufactured and marketed by Honda in its first generation as a two-door, two passenger liftback (1999–2006) and in its second generation as a four-door, five passenger liftback (2009–2014). In its third generation, it became a four-door sedan (2019–present). It was Honda’s first model with Integrated Motor Assist system and the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. without plug-in capability. EPA estimates for the first-generation Insight were 61 City/70 Highway/65 Combined.
Second generation (ZE2/ZE3; 2010–2014):
The new Insight includes Honda’s fifth generation of its Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system. This system mates an internal combustion engine with an electric motor mounted directly to the engine’s crankshaft between the engine and transmission.
Honda recommends using OEM genuine parts in their vehicles, although in some cases, the aftermarket parts can be cheaper and have equal quality and durability.
