Turbo wastegate actuator replacement, Volvo 850, S70, XC70, etc. – Auto Repair Series

Turbo wastegate actuator replacement, Volvo 850, S70, XC70, etc. – Auto Repair Series

Wastegate Replacement: ($80 / $180 / $400)

Wastegate info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXR9m-c_FuM

In this video I replaced the turbo actuator / wastegate on my 15g turbo. The main reason I replaced it is because the rod was severely corroded and it could not be adjusted, to rusty. I was also hoping it was defective because I am under boosting.

I like your video and the repair you made. Is there some reason other than cost you are not using new parts instead of gambling with ones out of a wrecking yard? I'm asking because this seems like such an important part.

FSAPO says:

Same issue I'm having right now in my 1996 850R. Fresh turbo, TCV, vacuum lines and no boost leaks. I'll figure it out eventually.

Theodore A Hoppe says:

Robert, I did not hear you mention that the engine warning light would come on or that there will be an error code indicating that it is a wastegate issue.

Milos Petrovic says:

HI! Robert, I have some problems with my 850 T5, problem is underboosting, I think that problem is in turbocharger, because iI tried to drive car without vacum line on wastegate and it was like before. What could be problem bad waste gate or bypas valve, and turbo is in good condition.

Much help, Robert.  Thanks.  I don't see a link for the "pro" 's method for removing the air intake.  I'm going to be down there replacing vacuum lines soon.  I've also got a question on your P0243, P0171 video.

Sebastian Schwarz says:

Which kind are you leaning toward, mechanical or electric? I'd like to get a mechanical gauge but I like to have a peak recall and alarm function. Those functions seem to only be on electric gauges. The search continues.

Sebastian Schwarz says:

Holy crap!! Going through boost/vacuum gauge overload!! Spent all evening reading about gauges. Mechanical vs electric arguments are fun to read. Have you installed any?

Sebastian Schwarz says:

I'll give you $20 if you find a nice one without any rust.

Sebastian Schwarz says:

It feels nice and quick. Thinking about installing a boost gauge in order to see a value.

Sebastian Schwarz says:

I retested it this morning and it still moves back and forth as I increase the pressure.

Sebastian Schwarz says:

How much would you be able to find one for? I am sure you'll find them less rusted then the one's up here. Thanks.

Sebastian Schwarz says:

My baby is a 1998 S70 T5. I am going to double check the pressure hopefully tomorrow. With the bad weather here in Chicago, am I just better off getting a new one or do they last. I have 153,000 miles on her.

Sebastian Schwarz says:

Do you think that if I was still able to apply pressure and see the rod move in and out, that it wasn't damaged? Or would I still see it move with the applied pressure being damaged inside? Any ideas to confirm if it is damaged or not?

Sebastian Schwarz says:

I couldn't believe how smooth it went to remove the heat shield and loosen the nut on the rod to test the wastegate after reading many horror stories. However, I think now it was too good to be true because after all that I believe I may have destroyed some diaphragm in the wastegate.  When I tried to loosen the nut, I spun the rod.  I realized that too late and then clamped it down to finally loosen it. I just read that if that rod spins you have broken the diaphragm inside.  Is that correct?  Did I just screw my self?

Jared Lohnes says:

Im assuming you are in economy mode. Seems low boost levels for sport mode.
