Replace Timing Belt on Volvo S60 XC90 with VVT

How to replace the timing belt on a p2 Volvo XC90 or s60 with dual vvt. I got fed up with confusing directions, but after doing the job over and over I got familiar with the process and wanted to help the next person have an easier time, without any of the usual YT car guy fluff. Remember, before I started I set the crank timing. Other than that, this video has everything you need to see and know. I will answer any questions I can about this process.

Kinda wild that the most critcal component on these cars are secured by 8mm bolts… 15ft/lbs? Wow…

I did this on my car after replacing the cylinder head and it’s throwing the p0016 and p0017 codes. I double checked timing and the car seems to run fine. Anything I should check? Any help would be useful. Thanks!

This is a satisfactory video. Can a VVT exchange be performed without any other work?

I'm sitting at my 2006 XC90 2.5T right now doing this job. I just installed the belt and followed your previous steps. When I go to turn the hubs clockwise, they don't budge, even with a lot of force (I just end up tightening the cap). This means the gears remain fully clockwise. Any advice? I did a cam seal replacement and just installed the hubs. Torqued the T55 bolt to 120nm.

Thank you for posting this. Was trying to use timing marks and thought that my timing was off. Did this and it was perfect!! Thanks again

@LuizFlorez-g9w says:

So I don’t have to loosen the inner center bolts inside the hub to set the timing?from what I got from the video u just loosened the 3 bolts on the gears.

So my water pump locked up and caused my timing belt to come off, I don’t want to take the head off, I was planning on retiming and compression testing,

I’m not sure how out of wack the timing could’ve got, do I put crank at TDC and then the cams (with lock tool) and would there be a chance of having to rotate the cams too much and making the pistons and valves contact?

Pretty new to this stuff, I don’t know if you’ll see this but I appreciate it in advance

@danm2422 says:

I need to replace the cam seals, when I go to put the hubs back on it’s the same process as in the video as long as my cams are locked in place? Like I don’t have to worry about marking the orientation of the gears? Thanks!
