P80 Volvo 2.4T Thermostat and Coolant Temp Sensor Replacement

P80 Volvo 2.4T Thermostat and Coolant Temp Sensor Replacement

In this Steve’s Garage video I replace a thermostat and coolant temperature sensor on a 2000 Volvo V70 with the 2.4t. This video is specifically for the later P80 Volvo cars. I know that the earlier 850 Volvos and P2 Volvos have similar engines and similar procedures to replacing the thermostat, but the sizes and location of the parts may be different. For example, I believe on the Volvo 850 you need to remove the power steering fluid reservoir to access the thermostat and coolant temp sensor. If you have an 850 or P2 Volvo, this video is more of a guide for replacing the thermostat and coolant temperature sensor. If you do own a 98-00 P80 V70 or S70, this video will be a perfect guide for replacing the thermostat and coolant temperature sensor.

I did not diagnose my coolant temperature sensor to be faulty or bad. I simply replaced it because I was in there, and it’s a good thing to replace when you’re in doing your thermostat. The same goes for the other way around. If you’re replacing your coolant temp sensor, throw a thermostat in as well. Both of these parts are vital to your P80 Volvos cooling system, and you shouldn’t take a chance with them.

Because of some poorly executed work by the previous owner of this P80 Volvo, I had a couple issues replacing the thermostat. They aren’t typical problems you’d face doing this job, but I included them anyway because you never know what you may come across! If you have any issues or questions, feel free to ask!

Overall, replacing your thermostat and coolant temperature sensor isn’t a complex job, and can be done in an afternoon. Use caution, take your time, and you’ll have no problem successfully replacing both the thermostat and coolant temp sensor. Thanks for checking out another Steve’s Garage video!

Damn, im so grateful i got one of these early thermostats like in your video… It's so easy compared to the ones after 2003.

The bolts were incredibly hard to take out. Like really bad as you mentioned. One of them got stripped from the impact driver, so I had to get a new set of bolts lol.
