How to replace the power steering rack on a P80 Volvo, 850, S70, V70, etc. – VOTD

Power steering rack replacement: 2 to 3 hours ($150 / $500 / $1200)

In this video I replaced the power steering rack and lines in my Volvo 850 Turbo while doing a manual transmission conversion. This video should have enough information to guide you through the process on your P80 vehicle.

Robert, I hear my steering wheel in my s70 squeal when I turn my wheel. It only happens in the cold. I have a full reservoir of power steering fluid. Could it be the belt?

Rob man , I have a very weird problem , I have hard spots on my steering and when I wash the motor on the back side by the exhaust manifold it gets looser for about a week then goes back to hard in spots , any idea ?

Alejandro Gonzalez says:

What reman brand is the best? I bought a Cardone a year and a half ago and it's already leaking off the passenger side seal.

Gbeke O says:

Robert and Ryan. The jack video mentions the rear suspension and front under subframe as places to jack. Where do you place your jacks when you need to loosen the subframe; without a lift?

Twig says:

Thank you Robert.
Do you think I should replace the PS pump too?
The car has done 216,000 miles.

Robert, have you ever tried to take a rack out and rebuild it? Thanks for posting this video.

Volvo Brad says:

Hey Robert! Do you change/flush your ps fluid on an interval? I just replaced my steering rack at 150 and plan on replacing the fluid every 40 thousand miles or so, hoping that it'll help me avoid doing this repair again. Also appreciating the info on the manual swap keep up the good work!

As Always, excellent video, Robert. Enjoyed watching. Thanks

Is there a way to replace the lines without dropping the subframe? My 98 V70 XC has a leak on the high pressure side, I have to top it off it at least one a week.

Ryan McCormick says:

I did the steering rack and pinion on a 98 Volvo GLT left the engine connected to the subframe just disconnected the coolant lines to the heater core was able to lower the rear of the subframe will just loosening the front subframe bolts and was able to get the steering rack out and the new one in the hardest part was lining up the steering linkage to the steering column took two people one to jack up the car and the other one to line steering linkage up as the subframe was being lifted up
