DIY: Volvo Shifter Button Replacement

DIY: Volvo Shifter Button Replacement

Video tutorial on how to replace the automatic shift knob button on a Volvo. Over time these can crack or break which prevents the button from releasing and will stick inside the knob assembly. Purchasing a new shifter knob can be very expensive and if you decide to go with the used route, you may run into the same issue. A new push button cannot be purchased from the dealer, but it can be purchased from online from eBay or IPD. This particular replacement came from eBay.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-new replacement button
-standard/flat screwdriver
-needle nose pliers
-factory Volvo automatic shifter knob

Procedure:
-first the knob needs to be removed from the vehicle for replacement
-if the button is stuck inside the shifter knob, use a screwdriver to push a plastic tab inside the shifter knob
-this will help assist the button out
-once the button is out, then pull the rest out with your fingers
-gently assist it out as most of the assembly is plastic and we do not want to risk breaking anything
-this button does have a very tight fit by the way
-if it is broken on the bottom like the one shown in the video, then you can pull the button further out and slide the pin out of the slot
-if not, then using a small standard screwdriver or needle nose pliers, the pin will need to be pulled from the alignment holes on the button
-remove the new button and spring from the package
-ensure the existing pins are in the correct location
-install the new spring
-the black tab may need to be pushed into the shifter knob a little
-clip the new button into place on the bottom side
-install the metal pin
-it does fit tighter into the button holes for the pin
-when pushing in the pin, use your finger as a backer so it doesn’t put excessive strain on the plastic tab so we don’t risk breaking it
-now push the button back into place
-for this knob I did find it a little harder to snap back into place
-reinstall the shifter knob back onto your vehicle
