I have enjoyed watching your set of videos. I have worked on my own cars
for the past 30 years, that`s the best way to have a car. I have always
used the Haynes manual, and now I can couple that with youtube, its
brilliant. I may have done a few things different from you, and if I made
the same video you would have probably said the same. However its about
time someone made a video on ” How to , Up-Load comments etc.” I can never
remember my passwords, and that is so frustrating. P.s. Have you done the
Serpentine belt yet.

TheTexasCoder says:

@guyevan9393 Thanks for the comment! Editing videos is starting to get
easier. This was my first series of videos ever, so they are long. That was
entirely due to my misunderstanding of YouTube’s limitations. I am glad
this helps you on your brakes. I think the AWD should be the same, but I
think you will find once you knock one side out, the other will go twice as
fast! Have fun and let me know how it turns out!

TheTexasCoder says:

@Aciluap Thanks for the comment and I am glad the videos helped! Yes, you
are right, since you are back there, replacing the parking brake pad should
be done. I did not do mine, and I have noticed that it is starting to slip,
I wish I would have done it when i did the rear brake job 🙂 But, at least
now I can pull the back wheels off and take a look at how these pads are
holding up. If it ever stops raining, I may try and get out there and grab
a video of the parking brake replacement.

TheTexasCoder says:

@alexc3589 very good point! I have a couple of boxes of them, but I got
caught up in the excitement of filming and get the brakes done, and I
didn’t put any on 🙁 I also like to wear them for ease of clean up, it
takes a long time to get that crud off my hands!

TheTexasCoder says:

@mcmancha1 Thanks for the comment and request. I have plans on doing an
adjustment to mine, and I will certainly get a video when I do it.
Hopefully my video will help. I also need to inspect the tensioning
mechanism for the parking brake, as mine has started to weaken over the
past couple of weeks. I will try and get a video out in the next couple of
weeks, as soon as this weather warms up. Thanks again for the comment and
the request!

mcmancha1 says:

@TheTexasCoder I am so hoping you will upload a video on adjusting the
parking brake, we are having a nightmare can’t get an inspection sticker,
Replaced brake shoes even. So we have been inside the console, adjusted it
this way and that. We must be doing something wrong. Just can’t seem to get
it to adjust. Plenty of internet instructions that are poorly illustrated,
we so need a video!

Aciluap says:

Nice job man ! I have the same car ,same year ,same problem ;)..except mine
is AWD. Only one question though : since i’ll replace the disc would’nt be
a good idea to replace the parking break pads too . its not holding like it
use to… Thanks

jjmotsch says:

Great video!! It’s nice to get a preview before I jump into doing the job.

Lauren Rob says:

Great series of video on brakes. I was wondering if you are planning on
doing one soon on replacing windshield wiper motor and linkages. Or if you
could give any advice on how to do it. Thanks.

vintagesoundvinyl says:

Great help watching this. Thanks from Toronto!

alexc3589 says:

you should wear latex gloves to protect your hands from all those chemicals
and dirt. a lot of mechanics do.

phdt12 says:

To the TheTexasCoder: I feel like I will only need to tighten my emergency
brake (I’m just getting around to actually replacing my rear rotors and
pads), do you have a video for that?

Adilson Decarvalho says:

great video

TheTexasCoder says:

@phdt12 Hey bud, good question! I have not adjusted my emergency brakes
yet. There is a procedure for doing that, and involves a little bit of
work, nothing terrible, but you wanna take your time when doing it. I will
try and get a video for it. Great suggestion! In fact, I was driving the
XC90 the other day and noticed the ebrake pedal goes almost to the floor,
and didnt feel like it had alot of bite to it. After I get my garage
cleaned out (this weekend) I will see if I can get a video done.

SRY944 says:

Great video series! Thanks! I just replaced the rear rotors, pads, spring
set and park brake shoes with the very clear explanation, video images and
helpful comments provided. My 4 year old (2008 – 6 speed manual gearbox)
XC90 rotors were badly corroded although neither the pads nor the brake
shoes were particularly worn. The park brake would no longer hold the car
on any steep incline. Please consider first releasing the cable tensioner
left hand side front footwell if brake shoes are worn.

TheTexasCoder says:

Thank you for the kind words! I am glad the video helped. If torqued
properly the lug nuts will stay on without a problem. The anti seize is
used in the event I have to change my tire on the side of the road and
using a lug wrench, it can be difficult if the lug nuts are rusted or
seized on there. But then again, if properly torqued, a lug wrench will
work every time. Part of it is also me being a little retentive 🙂

guyevan9393 says:

Very informative. I have to do my 05 AWD and they look the same. Only
suggestion I could have is maybe considering editing down each section to
8-10 minutes in length. Thanks for taking the time to present it though.

TheTexasCoder says:

@mamurao Thank you for the comment! I have a note on my desk to get this
adjustment video done, as soon as I do I will post it and send you a
message. Thanks again for the comment, and I am glad the video helped!

TheTexasCoder says:

@jjmotsch Thanks for the great comment! I am glad the video helped. As I
work on my XC90, I try and video all of the steps to help others. Thanks
again for watching!

phdt12 says:

TheTexasCoder Dude that was great! Thank you for taking the time to put
this brake job on video. I just got back from the Berkeley dealer and they
wanted $750 to do the rear brakes. I’ve done my own brakes for years and
have taught scores of folks to do it, but rear brakes, and on a newer car,
always make me wonder. It was nice to see the job first before just jumping
in myself. Very thorough job thanks! PS What’s Zimmerman Coating?

phdt12 says:

TTC: thanks for the response. Keep up the good work.

TheTexasCoder says:

@SRY944 Thank you for the comment and watching! That is great info about
the cable tensioner! Thanks for sharing, and I am glad you got your brakes
fixed up. Thanks again fro watching!

Damoyorkie says:

Great series, and I do think that you have got that really modest,
matter-of-fact approach that just inspires confidence. Only one question: I
was wondering why you anti-seize your lug nuts ? I always thought that the
friction is needed to keep them working properly.

TheTexasCoder says:

@phdt12 Thank you for the comment! I am glad it helped! Zimmerman Coating
is something I have never heard of…I know the oily substance that you
find on new brake rotors, and most other metal replacement parts, is called
cosmoline, which is just a corrosion and rust inhibitor. A lot of
manufacturers use cosmoline when storing or shipping metal parts.

mamurao says:

thanks for this man, very informative and detailed. i got a problem now of
sticky parking brakes, which i now see how to access. and see whats going
on , if you can make that video for parking brake adjust that will be
awesome
