INSANE Battery Drain (VW Touareg TDI – Part 2)

INSANE Battery Drain (VW Touareg TDI – Part 2)

Now that we have diagnosed the INSANE PARASITIC DRAW on this 2012 VW Touareg, we have to REPAIR the issue! Some parts will be required.

After installing and Coding the replacement Passenger Door Module (PDM), I try out a neat 2-channel portable oscilloscope to verify the repair.

This Crazy Euro Case Study definitely did not disappoint 🙂

This video shows an interesting method for identifying which network packets were sent by a particular device by putting a current clamp around one of the CAN communication wires going to the device.

It's not directly related to the diagnosis in this video, but it could be useful when trying to identify which device is sending bad packets, especially when it is not easy to get to the connectors needed to disconnect suspect devices from the network.

John T. says:

But did the folding mirrors work after you enabled them and locked the vehicle while out doing the test drive?

Keŕry Witherspoon says:

Other. Than loosing door functions. What would happen if modular. Was just unplugged

Cédric Pomerleau says:

I think it DOES have heated mirrors. A checkmark would mean it's NOT equipped with heated mirrors.

n124lp says:

The oscilloscope also has a waveform generator, which could be very useful, if it works well. I did not watch any reviews that tested this feature.

Agostino DiBella says:

That’s crazy! Why do car companies put a computer module inside a door where there is extra moisture from water getting in around the glass? There is just so much electronics packed into today’s cars.

Schnippen_Schnappen1 says:

Planned obsolescence for sure. Not only electronics but major important mechanical components it’s a big problem on new/newer vehicles

sparky obrian says:

its an excessive fascination with technology by engineers, just like the rotary knob for shifting with the other car

Rami Abou Assi says:

Challenging one always learn from your videos thanks

Randy Charlton says:

So after resetting the door module code. Did the mirror fold in?

Leo R says:

Maybe a Pico scope two channel 2240a for $150.00 on Amazon would be a better option?

tenmillionvolts says:

Awesome diagnosis Ivan. Did the mirror fold after coding?

Beni says:

Hi Ivan!
At the coding part, each octet or slot you were referring are actually just hexadecimal numbers for the binary digits, what you can edit. Each "slot" in the long code has 1 byte of space, that is 1111111 in binary or FF in hexadecimal. You can set each extra-option like heated mirrors and such with a single bit like 0 or 1, then it's convereted to a hexadecimal number, to fill the slot/ocetet in the long code. In this case it was 01011110 to 5E.
Good video as always!

Tim Wheeler says:

Thinktool Pros now has $150.00 off coupon from your link. Great video and diagnosis as always. Thanks PHAD

Chris Williams says:

Ivan, Thank you for lead on scope. I have been wanting to get one but could not justify the cost of Peco which keeps going higher and higher. This is a great alternative. Thank you!

Andy G says:

The modules have small micro switches which usually go bad due to foreign matter and/or failure which causes battery drain

flatdaddio says:

Love the parasitic draw videos. Very cool haw you hunt them down. I'm liking that little scope too!

Mcjjordan says:

What if you powered that door unit up with ignition supply instead of permanent?

Steve C says:

This is poor engineering. Each module should have a default timeout before it stops trying and then goes to sleep so that draws like this don't happen.

Werner X says:

I wish, i could as a simple customer or hobby mechanic get access to Alldata.
The diy repair manuals in Germany don't offer these infos you showed here and if they still include wiring diagrams, these are only partial diagrams, not complete coverage like in former times.
