No need to program the batteries unless it has battery management. It looks like a small control module on the negative terminal. Typically if you have start/stop it will have it though, in that case you need to have it reprogrammed at a shop or dealer after reinstall. Sorry for the delayed response!
I have 2015 GTI – dealer said while replacing the battery to use trickle charger so some computer settings do not get erased – is that true?
I had to replace the battery in my 2018 GLI. thats what I get for sitting in my car for long periods of time after I shut the car off lmao. It had enough juice to crank and turn all the lights on/touch screen on, but wouldn't start. Had it jump started and then bought a battery, they put it in for free.

You need make to know in ECU the battery had changed ! The batterys AGM comes with a code with and need to be insert in ecu for better electronics gerency. The cover in the battery increase ther life
