Here is a tutorial for the upgrade forums.vwvortex.c o m /showthread.p h p?2941881 (remove spaces) You can actually reprogram the key yourself as long as you have a working door lock. But if you have to get a key cut, that can be costly.

Esteban Romero says:

I NEED HELP!
I want to change the cover of my key to a new one just to get a brand new look. Can I do that? Would the key dis-program itself? I don’t want to go to the dealership.

Simon Dawkins says:

Good video. 1 problem though, i did not have the correct size battery in the multi-pack i purchased! Does anyone want 30 incorrect sized flat batteries?

R.mts.moto says:

obrigado muito elucidativo thanks

4Diyers says:

If you have another key programmed to the car, you can reprogram it yourself. Here are the instructions w w w .myturbodiesel.c o m/1000q/a4/vw-smart-key-remote-replacement. h t m (removed spaces)

Carol Cast says:

please I need help, I’ve changed the key fob and the remote BUT:
1) the engine didnt want to start (I don’t know how to remove the immobilizer)
2) the control is deprogrammed, is not working anymore 🙁
3) the key is not snapping all the way
4) I’ve called the dealership and they want to charge $160 to reprogram the control

Johan hemberg says:

Excellent. Now I have a new battery in place and all is functioning again.

Augustine Ortiz says:

I cannot get the key part of my fob apart! Any ideas?

4Diyers says:

Thank you 🙂
Nope, if you’re only replacing the battery, you only need the first part. The second part is if your removing the immobilizer or key.

Steve Bent says:

Great – thanks.

Do I need to do the second part (with the spring) if I’m just replacing the battery?

Thanks

🙂

Max Blinkhorn says:

Excellent! Nicely paced explanation and exactly right.#

mustafadjemal says:

Thanks dude, very helpful! Now i have a brandnew key case :))

4Diyers says:

Glad to help out 🙂
As for the immobilizer, it should just pop out. It just sits inside that little slot, so you might need a small screwdriver to give it a nudge to come lose.

Simon Westcott says:

Thanks for the vids. Any tips for removing the immobiliser chip/cylinder? I don’t want to break it! 🙂

Kimberly Demirhan says:

thanks. helps to much 🙂

I’ll always be adding new car videos… Some generic which applies to most car manufacturers, others model specific. Thank you 🙂

4Diyers says:

I actually sold the car about a year ago. Unfortunately I will no longer have videos on a VW MKIV unless I buy another one or work on a friend’s car.

4Diyers says:

Yes the hatch lock should work. That key with the little wrench sounds like the valet key. So it only works in the doors and ignition but not in the glove box and I believe hatch. As for the sunroof drains, here’s a thread I found explaining the locations forums.vwvortex.c o m /showthread.php?3191023-Sunroof-drain-cleaning-with-pictures (remove spaces). No problem, glad to help out 🙂

Denna Tracy says:

Sweet My hatch lock will work ? I will try it for sure. I have one key that is a normal round key and a FOB key that is switch blade I also have a key with a little picture of a wrench on it Not sure what that is for LOL Hay I have watched video after video I have no drain hole for my sun roof in the back or in my door jams any other place they might be ? Thank you sooooooo much for your help I will try this tomorrow 🙂

4Diyers says:

It may or may not work depending on the year of your MKIV. If the car doesn’t recognize the key, it will start and then shut down right away.

4Diyers says:

Your key needs to be reprogrammed into the car. It is possible that the key you disassemble wasn’t the car’s original key, therefore it has a different code. Once you replace the battery, it resets the fob therefore you have to reprogram the key. Follow the directions on here to reprogram your fob w w w .myturbodiesel.c o m/1000q/a4/vw-smart-key-remote-replacement. h t m (removed spaces)

lakefever2 says:

Dude, I followed your directions, read all the comments…..locks worked…..car started….then shut down. It deprogrammed my car!

4Diyers says:

As for your seized door lock… Sometimes you can get a good quality penetrating oil which will unseize the lock. But if it’s too bad, it’ll need to be replaced. Friend of mine ordered a new lock assembly for his and I believe it was about $100 from the dealer. Now for reprogramming your key fob, you will need a working lock. You can use the lock on your hatch or if they’re both seized, you can in behind the lock and push the micro switch manually.

4Diyers says:

In order to program your new key fob you will need another key which works in the car. I think you should be able to use your valet key if you have one. Just go to this link here which has step by step instructions w w w .myturbodiesel.c o m/1000q/a4/vw-smart-key-remote-replacement. h t m (removed spaces) About half way down the page.

Denna Tracy says:

i have a 99 beetle and bought a jetta key same FOB key as my Beetle only I pushed the pin out of the Flat Key blade and switched it that way Can you Program a jetta Key to unlock a Beetle It is the same key in every way also the driver side Key hole is seized up is there a way to fix this ?

4Diyers says:

You can swap the parts directly over with no problems at all… The worst case scenario would be you having to reprogram the fob, which can be done yourself. Just make sure that one of your door key locks do work and aren’t seized. But this only applies if your vehicle forgets the coat for that key fob. You most likely won’t have any issues though.

xPancakes4lyf says:

say i wanted to replace my key, only because the metal loop on the bottom of the key, broke off and i would prefer one so i can put it on a key chain. can i just purchase one online, pry open the old and new, and put the parts from my old key onto the new key with the metal loop on it. my dad keeps telling me its ganna cost up $80 and they have to configure the buttons to my car, and install the key? what can i do?

gormurx says:

Thank you, your video saved me from damaging the key fob

latintib says:

Thanks for the vid!! it really helped out!!! Replaced demobilizer chip and original key works perfectly thanks again!!!

snooptux00701 says:

I found a tiny long tubular piece in my vw key shell. Is that the demobilizer? Where does it go?
